Something Good

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

I saw the video for VanShe Tech’s remix of Something Good today and wondered why this tune never made it into my best of lists for 2007. In grade 9 I liked the original song so much I recorded onto a mix tape four times. The nostalgia for Utah Saints alone should have nominated to the top of my arbitrary charts in some capacity.

Justice for Billie Jean

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

I haven’t posted a mashup in a while (besides that Satisfaction one from yesterday) so I figured I’d direct your attention to mashuptown where I poached this piece of brilliance!

More heat from Barcelona

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Alex Ferrer worked as a commercial producer but one day in August he decided to pack it in to create music full time. In those few months he’s produced a number of tight gems. The roots of these tunes are planted deepling into house music (despite Alex’s early industrial days) but as with nearly everything coming out these days, there’s a huge amount of cross-genre pollination going on. There’s some acid tweakery, french-like filters, robotfunk, epic synth lazery, and strobed vocals.

A single will soon be released on Pistol (EMI Sublalbel). Watch for it.

Benny Benassi and THE SHAKE

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Ha! No joke, Lotek and Manalogue are opening for Benny Benassi. Funny bizniss.

We’re playing in the side room, here are the details:

Monday, April 28, 2008 8:00 PM - 2:00 AM
Tijuana Yacht Club (TYC) 1405 St. Matthews Avenue
$20 plus GST
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=9745448393

Lotek vs Manalogue 8pm-10pm
Khemlab 10-11pm
LoProgression 11pm-12pm

Presumably Benny Benassi starts at midnight.

Since we’re on so early on a Monday nonetheless, we’ll probably play some slower material, but who knows - it could get all hyphy too.

To get you in the spirit here’s something you love and know so well…

Daft Punk remixed by Homework

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

The Holland team who call themselves HOMEWORK (clearly an homage to arguably the best dance music pair the world has ever seen) don’t venture too far from the original iconic Daft Punk track. That speaks volumes about how great and timeless the original tune is. With a handful of other remixes under their belt perhaps these guys will be something to watch for.

INXS

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Since Streetlab remixed “Need You Tonight” a couple months back there have been a number of attempts at this seminal 80s number. The most recent cut-up by Jon Gill ventures much further than the original and as a result it seems to be the friendliest for dancefloor.

MP3: INXS - Need U Tonight (Jon Gill’s one of my kind remix feat. Cozmic Cat)

Thanks for KissAtlanta for the find.

Since we’re talking 80s throwback, I might as well post this anthem sampling another 80s tune, this time from Bronski Beat. I’m sure you’ve heard this in the club when you’re all wasted and danced your face off and maybe even felt a bit foolish for doing so. If not, now’s your chance.

Chris Rockwell rocks well!

Monday, April 7, 2008

Chris Rockwell sasy he’s been spinning records since the age of 12. That’s quite the feat since he’s 28 now. With former residencies at Ottawa hotspots such as Helsinki, MTL & Co., and Kinki he’s been around the block a few times and is no stranger to free drinks and debilitating hangovers. Currently resident at Cornerstone with frequent gigs at Sunrise Afterhours, Club Heaven and various other events, he is busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest these days. He’s appeared on the bill with DJ’s such as Hatiras, Mat The Alien, Luke Fair, Endo, Eddy Jasmin, and the immensely popular Jokers of the Scene of “Y’All Know The Name” fame.

He sent his latest mix my way and it’s outstanding. Complete party rocker from start to finish. Check it out here.

I’m supposed to making money…

Monday, April 7, 2008

Well, aren’t we all. Really though I need to find additional income especially with some expenses coming this way. This post, despite my wife’s preference takes precedence however. (She’s so sick of everything I play, she probably doesn’t read my blog anymore anyway. PS I love you LV!)

While I’m working on a few things to advance some financial stability some tunes are playing. I’m sitting down typing and thinking and typing and thinking then the LA Riots vs. Villains remix of Hot Chip’s Ready for the Floor starts to pound. I turn the volume up, then up again, totally drowning the next door neighbour’s construction noise. The tune with it’s booming bass sonics and synth stabs pull me to my feet and I’m rocking it all by myself in my living room. No lie, fists clenched and repeatedly raise up and down like a dancefloor piston.

Rock + Remix = Dance

Monday, April 7, 2008

A couple weeks ago on THE SHAKE Lotek played a bit of thunder from Saint Pauli. The Hamburg-Paris duo just remixed a track by the four-piece The Floor Is Made Of Lava, merging crunchy guitar with squelchy synth into a workout suitable for dancefloor calisthenics.
