FABRICLIVE. 41 SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

In a way, James Ford and Jas Shaw should be credited for the creation and publication of MANALOGUE.COM. A few years ago I was super depressed with music from record shops here in the Peg. A very dear loved one noticed my downtroddenness and encouraged me to order some new records online. During one purchasing binge I blindly came across “HUSTLER.” I went bonkers for this track which subsequently spawned my brighter love for dance music, eventually leading to this blog.

When fabric sent a promo copy of FABRICLIVE. 41 Simian Mobile Disco I was super pumped to check it out. The first few mixes on the disc reminded of me of my early rave days where late evenings were spent dancing until the sun was bright. The mixes are subtle, slow, and technically precise. The lack of strobed vocals became apparent straight away and in fact, SMD steer clear of all strobed activity. It’s refreshing that SMD keep this mix clean with a brilliant 22-track collection of robotdisco which confidently pounds some old fashioned techno into this blend of dancefloor sonics. SMD start by letting loose with some kind of rhythmic bird and a fluffy layer of funk from Sistors of Transistor. The mix keeps the rollers locked to the synthetic flavours of disco like the captivating track from Metro Area who hype things up with their pillowy bassline. The adventure graduates into some meaty techno - finishing with two classics Spastik and Flash before the cooldown from the last track from Walker Brothers.

The CD drops August 11 in the UK and September 16 in North America. When it’s available, you can get your copy from fabric.

SEBASTIEN TELLIER: SEXUALITY

Sunday, July 27, 2008

For some reason, SEBASTIEN TELLIER and the buzz surrounding him hasn’t tinted the charts in Canada like they do in his native France. His previous work dipped into hues of avant garde experimentalism but still remained accessible pop albums. Tellier worked with Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo to create p*rn music. He said the motivation for SEXUALITY was to create an R’n'B record coloured with synthesizers and European sensuality. I’m not sure if the typical Canadian fear of sex will shade sales here in the great white north, regardless, it’s time for people to turn off their synth blockers and get into an orgy with (Georgio) Moroder-like flirty noodlings and American booty obsessed R’n'B.

Chopper

When I was in Paris for my honeymoon I went walking about on a Sunday to check out the streets in a few different areas. All of the shops were closed including this department store I came across with giant window display for Sexuality. Like the mood of this record, the display was wrapped in a sexy gloss. Only a few 12″ sleeves floated in the glimmering  window space and I think I nearly pitched a tent looking at it and I’m sure I would have made a mess of myself if I walked into the shop.

Sexual Sportswear

Before I left France I picked up the first single, Sexual Sportswear. Most of the songs on the album groove a little slower than this track. The album itself isn’t entirely floorfiller material but think how great it would be to play at your next dinner party. Get rid of your generic jazz hits and throw this one on instead, then find a bowl for your keys.

MP3: Sebastien Tellier - Sexual Sportswear

The track that really makes me want to tear my clothes off is the album opener. The sultry piano at the top sets the mood for intrigue. (Maybe it helps that I don’t understand French too?) The painfully slow rhythm is the perfect tease with the bassline that leads into near orgasmic levels.

MP3: Sebastien Tellier - Roche

The closer, L’Amour Et La Violence - it’s a track that drops you to your knees with its endless progression. A romantic fantasy, epic and tragic.

MP3: Sebastien Tellier - L’Amour Et La Violence

Honestly though, what’s a Manalogue post without something for vertical dancing.

MP3: Sebastien Tellier - Sexual Sportswear (Donovan remix)

You can get all romanticsynthetic if you’re lucky to live in the big smokes.

Aug. 3rd @ Osheaga Festival, Montreal QC
Aug. 4th @ Mod Club, Toronto ON

THE GLAMOUR TICKET GIVEAWAY

Thursday, July 24, 2008

THE GLAMOUR

Last winter local party enthusiasts THE NUTTY KLUB booked THE GLAMOUR to play at a metal bar called the Albert here in Winnipeg. I know there are better things to talk about other than the weather - uh, like fear mongering propaganda behind every single Republican election campaign, but Milwaukee’s best neon revitalists, THE GLAMOUR, were snowed in and couldn’t make it to the gig. Even without the headliners the event was a bit over the top.

Well, they’re playing at The Pyramid this Friday, July 25. Jason and I are giving away two pairs of tickets on our show THE SHAKE (facebook group). We roll every Friday night from 8-9 on 92.9 KICK FM, and play an aural potluck of electro, robotdisco, mashups, club whathaveyou. You can think of it as a warmup for the evening and maybe win a pair of tickets courtesy of MIKE B.

Otherwise, tickets are $10 at INTO THE MUSIC or MUSIC TRADER or $15 at the door.

REWIND

<< REWIND

<<REWIND is an 80s remix project from BUFFETLIBRE featuring 60 remixes from some of your favourite and not so favourite tunes from the hairspray generation. Indeed, the whole all-you-can-eat package will fatten your hard drive, especially because every single tune is available for free, most of which are shared at a high bit rate.

Here are a few choice cuts for the dancefloor.

Anoraak

This song is infectious. It’ll get in your head and suck out your consciousness like a parasite.
MP3: Anoraak - Talking In Your Sleep (The Romantics Cover)

Hidden Cat

Way back when, this was a sockhop favourite so now with some added grit and booming sonics it’s easily becoming a modern replacement.
MP3: Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth (Hidden Cat remix)

The Missiles

Purely instrumental, this track is a modern spin of the original’s timeless riff. Slop it up with some wet and sticky synth work and it’s difficult not to like.
MP3: Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy (The Missiles remix)

Database

My wife and I were driving somewhere when the original of this one started playing on the radio. I started singing, or tried to rather, which really surprised her. She thinks I only listen to music with chainsaw synth and bass. Thankfully, this ace remix let me prove otherwise.
MP3: George Benson - Turn Your Love Around (Database remix)

Heartache

What has nine arms and sucks? Def Leppard. That’s my all-time favourite joke so automatically Heartache had a huge handicap with this track. This one is quite enjoyable for the most part, although it’s difficult to get past what little vocals that remain.
MP3: Def Leppard - Photograph (Heartache remix)

Dragonette

The sharp piano and bandsaw buzz contrast so well in this track it’s like partybangerfloorfillerpop. Bring it on and practice yer dance. Doods take note - there’s a message in here: SUIT UP!
MP3:
Dragonette - Sharp Dressed Man (ZZ Top Cover)

ER2

Can’t say I undersand much of the tune except it’s synth pop with a banging 4/4. Wait a minute I think I understand everything now.
MP3: ER2 - Le Jerk (Thierry Hazard Cover)

Cryptonites

There’s a bit of pattern emerging. Yes, I like crusty basslines and chainsaw guitars. Manalogue favourites Cryptonites deliver more of the afformentioned with some epic, big room high-end keeping the momentum up for this three-minute stomper.
MP3: Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax (Cryptonites remix)

Lismore

This track has more of a groove than a stomp so the low end keep you rollin and the buzzing keeps you satisfied. Don’t worry, it’s still a dance number but the hands won’t be waving in the air like they just don’t care which is perfect by me cuz that means they’ll find something more interesting to do. WOT?
MP3: Lismore - Wot (Captain Sensible cover)

Sidechains

If this was a contest, hands down this remix would win - it’s the Manalogue favourite of the entire Rewind project. Super glam. Super deluxe. Yes. I don’t even like Madonna much.
MP3:Madonna - Get Into The Groove (Sidechains remix)

CSK OK

How much chainsaw grinding buzziness can one take? Geez! This one’s close for first place. It’s thumpy and introspective, a bit dark perhaps, but EFF! Pure dancefloor thunder with an overthetop guitar solo you’ll be sure to air out.
MP3: Marietta - Destination Unknown (CSK OK remix)

Moulinex

I’m really getting tired so I hope you’re enjoying all of this. Comments are appreciated. I’m sure Moulinex would appreciate your love too. He knows I love this song, well if he reads this he will. Seriously, this remix/cover/reconstruction would go so well with a warm sunrise. Baby.
MP3: Pinapples - Come On Closer (Moulinex remix)

Overthrill

Modern French house music…or something like it cuz Overthrill are two guys from Germany. Whatever, they’re influenced by Daft Punk so if you can’t hear that then yer deaf. Filters, squelch, and a beat to keep you moving late into the night. Dig it.
MP3: The Gap Band - Burn Rubber On Me (Overthrill remix)

Xinobi

Finally, the last one. Well there are tonnes more over at BUFFETLIBRE you can check out. This one though, the last Manalogue favourite if you will, is a tasty house number. I could do without the hornsomethingoranother but I’ll get over it.
MP3: Roger Troutman - Do It (Xinobi remix)

COCONUT WIRELESS + SARAH WALKER + CHEMICAL BROTHERS

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

I’m not really sure what to make of this. The last three messages in my inbox have all been from German producers. What’s happening here? Can someone tell me?

Coconut Wireless

The previous two posts strayed slightly from content usually featured on Manalogue so here are a pair of remixes by Hamburg’s COCONUT WIRELESS you might come to expect more of. Viscous basslines and a rich 4/4 makes for a great floor-filler start. These ingredients are like the spoons of sugar over slices of apple in a tasty strudel.

Sarah Walker

Electro vixen SARAH WALKER gets the remixxx treatment - if you know what I mean.

MP3: Sarah Walker - Punani (Coconut Wireless remix)

The Chemical Brothers

The CHEMICAL BROTHERS gets thick and gooey. Yummy.

MP3: The Chemical Brothers - Salmon Dance (Coconut Wireless remix)

uuuuuuuuuuuuuh, this is totally crass, but there’s a fishy theme to this post all of a sudden.

SCHLACHTHOFBRONX

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

schlachthofbronx

More love from Germany!

Besides some really great graphics, the story behind this three-piece states that they formed from a spontaneous meeting in parking lot where a commitment to bassmusic was developed out of various band experiences, soundsystem and dj culture. SCHLACHTHOFBRONX is said to have its home in Munich in an unpleasant industrial area between a slaughterhouse and an abandoned playground inhabited by drug addicts. Their music reflects the physical environment. It’s heavy and speaks for itself.

MP3: Schlachthofbronx - We Nah Fraid

MP3: Schlachthofbronx - Fatthing (dubstep rmx)

MIT

Monday, July 21, 2008

MIT

Various minimal offerings from Colgne Germany here. The first from MIT features the three-piece’s signature arthouse bleeps. The original track is full of youthful energy and obtuse noodlings but squares up with enough thump to stomp through any dancefloor.

MP3: MIT - Rauch (Original Mix)

Kompakt cousins, COMA, deliver more mechanics on their remix which should appeal to those drawn to dim warehouses late at night.

MP3: MIT - Rauch (Coma remix)

Meanwhile, LUKE ABBOTT of Border Community lightens things up a seven minute journey into springtime, flowers, and softly caressed hands.

MOWGLI + MARTIN SOLVEIG

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Just got the okay to post this but before you poach it, CHECK IT OUT ON BEATPORT. Yes, it’s more wobbly bass from MOWGLI, this time in the form of a MARTIN SOLVEIG remix. Mowgli adds some bass thunder to this otherwise straightforward house track.

Mowgli has some UK dates followed by an Australian tour this fall so if you’re able, throw him some love and see the man tear up the dancefloor.

BREAKDOWN BOOTLEGS

BREAKDOWN

I’m happy I can finally enjoy some R&B pop garbage others loved a decade or two ago. Get ready for some illegitimate sample use. Bobby Brown or any of the three Anthonys from Tony! Toni! Toné! probably don’t read Manalogue so I think it’s safe to post them here.

MP3: Breakdown - Do What I Want
Some might save this as “My Perogative”

MP3: Breakdown - Feel This!
Others might save this as “Feels Good”

If you’re feeling adventurous, make sure to check out BREAKDOWN’s remix of Bass Phenomenom.
