Every Friday LOTEK and I whittle our favourite tunes of the week down to a single hour’s worth of material for our show on 92.9 KICK FM. It’s not easy considering the volume of tunes spread across the interwebs these days. Aside from arsenal of dancefloor oriented mashups and remixes I try to play cuts that would fit into the KICK playlists on their own which is why I was happy to hear something familiar the other day on WINNIPEG’S NEW SOUND.
This one hasn’t reached the KICK 40 yet but maybe now that I’m bringing a little attention to the tune, the boss might find more merit in it. Probably not. You’re best bet then, is to listen to THE SHAKE (facebook group) every Friday night for a weekly dose of dancefloor heat. From 8-9 Lotek and I (Manalogue) provide an excellent warmup to the weekend where you can hear tunes like the ones below from LA RIOTS and DESIGNER DRUGS.

The Spanish quartet of producers and remixers known as DELOREAN just dropped their Baltimore club and sunshine influenced version of the latest MYSTERY JETS single .

The remix features chords of uplifting piano stabs, high-toned synth sweeps, and some infectuous bmore hand claps under a lonely warning for love’s expectations. Overall this tune provides great aural / emotional juxtaposition - as such, it’s great for both the dancefloor and solitary listening.

Berlin based technocrats EGOTRONIC are set to release their third album creatively titled Egotronic. The first single drops sometime in mid November which features remixes by AUDIOLITH labelmates Frittenbude and Juri Gagarin, as well as a grinding chainsaw version by Saint Pauli.
It takes a minute or so for the tune to go anywhere but after the intro and a brief breakdown with some classic Rotterdam stabs SAINT PAULI bursts through with his buzzing maximalism.
MP3: Egotronic – Raven gegen Deutschland (Saint Pauli remix)
Seriously though, can anyone tell me what Raven gegen means?

That VAN SHE remix I mentioned earlier dropped a lot sooner than anticipated. G.L.O.V.E.S. already had it in the bag but were waiting for the okay from MODULAR to spread the love.
In this edit G.L.O.V.E.S. (aka Yama Indra and one half of DAMN ARMS) keeps the soft tone of the original and adds some flanged filters to boost its dancefloor sensibilities. This track truly lies in a feel good category, like sunshine, soft kittens, and smooches.

Big N.E.W.S. from Melbourne’s G.L.O.V.E.S. – after their first release on LEKTROLUV the duo have been signed up for two more 12s for BANG GANG.
In G.L.O.V.E.S.’ latest remix project for THE DEATH SET, nothing of the original track is left. This reconstruction blends new school glam house with a few classic rave elements (listen carefully enough and you’ll hear a whistle), turning it into a laser-cut-floor-funker.
MP3: The Death Set – Listen to This Collision (G.L.O.V.E.S. remix)
Expect to hear more gloved remixes soon. They’re scheduled to release Cut Copy and Sneaky Sound System. G.L.O.V.E.S. have also hooked up with MODULAR with a VAN SHE edit that should come out in the next couple weeks so keep yer ears peeled.

It’s too bad I used the sugary metaphor on the last post. Regardless, here’s something a bit unusual from Toronto’s CANDY COATED KILLAHZ. They say they want you to meet their dark side because they can’t be day-glo 90s all the time.
The duo are performing at the Monolith Festival in Red Rocks, Colorado this Saturday. Not in Colorado? Check out their album It Factor at MAPLE MUSIC or iTunes.

Peter from JAPATTACK sent this my way. He’s pretty pumped about the remix and says ANORAAK give him musical boners. This remix is pretty sexy. It keeps the soft tones of the original and makes it more floaty. Yes floaty – it’s a technical term used by music journalists for songs that drift lightly. In particular the whipped synth layers rest on top of sugary melodies so be careful because overconsumption of this one might cause a toothache.

I’ve been searching for music for my wife. She says she’s sick of everything and really tired of the my technocratic rule of blinding electro and heavily strobed dance music.

These songs have been around a minute already but they meet the criteria set by my lovely. She wants music with changes (ie. more complex song structure than the usual 16-bar measure repetion) and most of all, she wants “music with words.” Strobed vocal samples give her seizures – that’s what she tells me anyway. ha. Lately I’ve been totally wrong, but maybe she’ll like HURCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR.
MP3: Hercules and Love Affair – Blind
When my wife was in Japan she picked up a Frankie Knuckles mixtape. Although this next one is a dub, I hope she likes it all the same.
MP3: Hercules and Love Affair – Blind (Frankie Knuckles dub)
Coincidentally, this new one from IMMUZIKATION arrived this weekend as well. Generally mashups are vetoed altoghether but this one’s so smooth it’s hard to tell there are two tracks making up the one.
MP3: Hercules and Love Affair + Fan Death – Blind Death (Immuzikation Blend)
BONUS

It’s funny, she says I used to listen to better music but really, I still listen to the same kind of music. Production techniques have changed quite a bit over the years which accounts for some differences in the way dance music sounds now. Really though, it’s still similar. As we drove out of the city for a weekend retreat on Saturday she played a CD she burned in the summer of 2006. On it was this gem, one of the last tracks my wife says we both liked.
