HOMEWORK

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Here’s an interpretive art lesson from HOMEWORK who just happen to be the biggest Daft Punk fans in Amsterdam. Their most recent productions are both titled after prominent visual artists TRACEY EMIN and JASPER JOHNS. I’m having a little difficulty finding any correlation between the cuts and the artists so I’ll let you find your own interpretation.

THE PHANTOM’S REVENGE + FUTURE FLASHS

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Hailing from Hamburg, Germany FUTUREFLASHS cut up a slick robotdisco blend for the one and only THE PHANTOMS’S REVENGE. Details of the single are being kept on the down low for the time being but an official EP will be released on an Australian Label with the original, a Louis La Roche remix and another Original Track from The Phantom’s Revenge soon. Rumour has it the remix below was close to making the cut which is kinda too bad for FutureFlashs but good for you because now you get it in all of its high bit-rate glory. Loads of filters accompany this super progressive disco remix. Grab a drink and get your party on.

EH TEAMERS AT DAY OLD DONUTS

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Winnipeg’s favourite anti-ravers DJ HUNNICUT and DJ CO-OP are proud hosts of their weekly DAY OLD DONUTS. This week they’re bringing in a pair of the EH TEAM, DJ Pump and DJ Jr-Flo. Should be a mad presentation of skillz on the ones and twos from some of Canada’s finest. Don’t believe me, check out the KEYS N KRATES footage of their live remixes. Here’s a sneak:

Before you flip, here’s a point of clarification. DJ Jr-Flo is part of the Eh Team, as well as Keys N Krates. This little vid showcases the man’s talents. You can grab all that action for only $5 - check it out at the HiFi Club Thursday, October 9.

CHUBBY FINGERS

Monday, October 6, 2008

Making my way through the digital mailbag – finally I get to the latest number from CHUBBY FINGERS. Booker and BlaQwest throw down with a round low-end, rolling house stomper. It’s dark and slightly minimal with it’s cannons aimed at destroying the dancefloor.

NITE CELLS + COIN OPERATED BOY

Monday, October 6, 2008

Here’s a piece I’ve been sitting on for far too long. Back in June I had some severe hosting issues that basically prevented me from posting. During that time NITE CELLS sent their first original and well – here it is. Better late than never although if this were a project for school it would be an automatic fail. Thankfully I’m done that program and the technical issues have been resolved.

“Try It Feel It” is a grinding monster with a jagged bassline and racing keyboards meant for peak hour excitement. It’s the kind of track you’d expect dancefloor patrons to lose control of their limbs where feet hover above the ground and arms take flight. Hold on this one’s a sonic adventure.

Sheffield’s COIN OPERATED BOY took a stab at remixing the track. He slows it down slightly but keeps the sharpness of the original using an arsenal of laser-guided chainsaws and heavy thumpery.

UPDATE: Congratulations to Nite Cells. They’ve been signed to TASTY BYTES RECORDS. Please support them and grab the single from somewhere like beatport.

DATA + WHITE CHOKOLATE

Sunday, October 5, 2008

This summer DatA dropped “Rapture” which features ex DFA 1979 member Sebastien Grainger on vocals. Shortly after the Parisian producer announced a remix contest for the single. The contest has since closed however looks like some of the results have started to spill over.

Although his people at WEDOITRIGHT haven’t said, it’s likely that WHITE CHOKOLATE was one of the producers who took the Rapture remix challenge. The 25 year-old producer from Greece didn’t stray too far from the orginal 80s synth flava. He adds a deeper bassline  which gets slightly crunchier after the hair metal inspired guitar solo and more prominent snare. All in all – the track’s pretty smooth.

DATABASE + LARRY TEE + LOUIS VUITTON + STARDUST + MIDNIGHT MARTYN

Friday, October 3, 2008

I chuckled when I opened my inbox this morning and saw a message from DATABASE. They sent me a pack of goodies including their remix of LARRY TEE‘s latest “Louis Vuitton” – only after I downloaded it I noticed it was labeled “Lois Vuitton.” After two years of an intense journalism program small things like these become a HUGE deal sometimes so I had to do some quick research and no, this track isn’t named after the designer’s could-be sister after all. ha.

On a side note, Larry Tee seems to have re-invented himself. Once known for his association with the doomed electroclash scene, LT is consistently producing juicy dancefloor monsters. This remix is no different. It’s a sizzlin’ piece of electro house something that takes cues from JUSTICE and is built on a roughly modulated synth chorus and a thick stompy beat that calls for the dancefloor.

MP3: Larry Tee – Louis Vuitton (Database remix)

The Brazilian duo must have had fun tweaking out “Louis” because accompanying the Larry Tee remix was a short rework of the STARDUST mega hit “Music Sounds Better…” Both remixes in the package are tight and both share the same kind of wet synth work.

MP3: Stardust – Music Sounds Better With You (Database redo)

The third filtered golden nugget is a track from half of Database, Yuri Chix, who produces using the moniker MIDNIGHT MARTYN. It’s not quite as intense as the two remixes above but don’t let that scare you off. It’s more house than electro and this original contains a highly contagious groove that will lock you into a perpetual bob if you’re not carefull. Judging from the title, it’s clearly influenced by the warmth of Brazil.

COPYCAT + DEAN MARTIN + LADY GAGA + FRANZ FERDINAND + RADIOHEAD

Thursday, October 2, 2008

COPYCAT sent me his latest – and holy eff it’s a great escape into a mellow groove. His remix of Dean Martin’s “Mambo Italian” takes the bassline on a bit of a reggae trip. Add a sharp break to the beat and you get a track with some serious mass appeal. It’s minimal enough to play at dim parties, and groovy enough to find on cafe compilations world-wide. Throw this on and yer gramma might cut a rug.

MP3: Dean Martin – Mambo Italiano (A Copycat remix)

Last month Copycat sent me one of his mashups and I feel terrible for not posting it until now. It’s totally not intentional – things easily get burried in my inbox these days. LOTEK (aka the other beat captain on THE SHAKE) first turned me onto Copycat’s work a couple years ago and I’ve been impressed with his productions ever since. If the two tunes in this bootleg weren’t so recognizable you’d be hard pressed to tell that there were two songs in this quality blend. Copycat matches them so well.

For this mashup Copycat explains, “I was working on something completely different, but it turned out my good friend Divide & Kreate kind of had the same idea and beat me to it. To spite him and get a little revenge, I decided to nick one of his old ideas and do a little hommage to him. Well, I am the Copycat, aren’t I…?”
