MARIENBAD + OPOPO

Monday, March 30, 2009

Martin Mclaughlin and Benjamin Gibson began working together between extended stays in Amsterdam and Paris in search of cultural enlightenment. While roaming the streets of each city, Gibson and McLaughlin conducted endless sound experiments in an attempt to express the moods and visual aromas of such urban landscapes. Inspired as much by non-musical art forms, the beginnings of MARIENBAD had come to fruition.

After two years of working and traveling abroad, Gibson and McLaughlin returned to Canada with an arsenal of new sounds and ideas. Named after the 1961 French new wave film, Marienbad have developed a unique blend of 80’s acid house and avant-garde disco by fusing together analog synthesizers, drum machines and organic instruments. The pair insist they’re not a laptop band, nor are they fucking DJs. YYZ RECORDS believed them enough to release their debut long player this summer.

“Notti Bianche” is a hit of acid house presumably influenced by another French film – slightly minimal but totally adventurous.

Who know the baseball hall-of-famer liked smooth house with subtle brass flairs and funky basslines?

Marienbad’s rework for OPOPO turns the tune into an infectious house music toe-tapper.
