Turzi

Turzi

I am amidst an epic battle of laptop repair and warranty negotiations. I’m posting from an iPhone I stole from a 12yr old…

When someone sends me a promo track with “…out on chocolate coloured 12″ vinyl in October” in the email, I tend to listen.

Turzi‘s home is Record Makers. A label that is also home to Kavinsky & Sébastien Tellier and you can really hear the connection between the three. The Buenos Aires/Bombay EP is haunting and moody. Apparently, there’s an album in the works called “B” which will follow up the previous album “A”. All in all, some tight production, clean sounds, vocoders, dance-dance-dance.

Coming to a city near you!

18 Oct / Corsica Studios / London
19 Oct / Free in-store show @ Rough Trade East / London
20 Oct / Borderline / London
29 Oct / Elysée Montmartre / Paris

Video Turntablism on the Prairies

So my last post was about leaving Montreal for greener pastures in Alberta. Aside from the pastures actually being rather yellow, I am doing pretty well so far. I miss being metres away from live DJs and music almost every night of the week, now I am having to drive to out of the way clubs just to get a taste of a little electro.

Now, here is where things get a bit interesting. There is going to be a big show this Friday night. Where is it? Calgary? Edmonton? Red Deer? No way, Airdrie Alberta.

Yes, yes, Yall. The bass heads and tech freaks of Airdrie time to get down. DJ Tell-X has his own brand of DJing, which will no doubt make for an interesting night. He can actually control the video and audio with his tables and mixer. Check the video for a taste:

DJ and VJ wrapped up in one, pretty crafty I must say. So, if you’re in Calgary, I suggest making the trip, if you are in Airdrie, you have no excuse. I know we’re not going to turn Airdrie in to Ibiza after one show, but it’s a start!

SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO + DADA LIFE

The Swedish duo DADA LIFE have been in the habit of remixing some of their favourite tunes and playing the bootlegs in their sets. The results have proven fruitful so luckily they’ve shared the latest with blogs worldwide.

Here then is the 10th “Guerrilla Fart,” with deep and cavernous kick drums, hand claps, and acid tweakery to knock you back to 1996.

Since Dada Life was so generous in sharing this gem with all of us, why not check out their full length on somewhere like beatport.

Oh, if you missed these, don’t sleep on it, they’ve be in my playlists for months and they’re not going anywhere.

MADRID + VITAMINSFORYOU

Toronto’s MADRID do things a bit different – they make an etheral psychedelia / electro pop hybrid … or something like that. (Uh, seriously, not trying to categorize anything here, but you gotta know what you’re getting into, right? That is, you know, assuming you read before clicking.)

Former Winnipeger and local hero VITAMINSFORYOU, injects a heavy dose of a thickening agent into the Madrid’s latest single. The vitamin therapy creates a bassline so thick and chewy it gets stuck in your teeth and gums-up your mouth so much it renders you speechless after the first measure.

BERTIE BLACKMAN + WILD TURKEYS

Here’s a bit of melancholy to embrace the mid-week blues, courtesy of BERTIE BLACKMAN, remixed by Wild Turkeys.

MP3: Bertie Blackman – Thump (Wild Turkeys remix)

Bertie is set to embark on an Australian tour throughout August, followed by performances around the nation on the Parklife Festival alongside LaRoux, Little Boots and Metric.

THE TRUTH IS…

Honestly, I don’t mean to be truant for so long. The life of a part-time blogger is tough, plus sometimes I just want to play tunes instead of writing about them (and other times I played a few shows (Villains was fun fun fun), and still other times I just went to shows (Datarock was so good), but most of the time I need to focus on other things). I do feel guilty though, like I’m not holding up my end of the bargain. Trust me though, you’re still getting the better deal.

This one could use some more wobble, but MICHAEL MORPH gets the point across. Eff, I’d love to see YO MAJESTY.

Do you like noise? OWL VISION does (click to grab his entire album for free), and so do the STEREOHOES (who have one of the best names ever).

BURNS

One of the most incredible things about the young UK producer, BURNS, is his range in dancefloor kinetics. He’s capable of setting things on fire with rave-like anthems, while also keeping tunes hot and sexy and his latest EP, is a fine example of Burns’ diverse talents. His third release receives a little French touch in the form of remix help (not that it’s needed) from FRED FALKE who takes “First Move” and transforms the track into an epic journey that explores far and deep regions of bliss.

As if this video by 810″>THOMAS BACHELLIER doesn’t get you all hot? The only better way to showcase the original tune’s dancefloor merit would be in a live setting. I know what I’ll be asking for in my next gig (A MECHANICAL BULL!).

Make sure to catch Burns on tour. He’s providing support to Deadmau5 over the next couple of months and lucky for me…they’re coming to Winnipeg. More on that later hopefully.
