RIOT 87

RIOT 87 is a dubstep and drum’n’bass duo who subtly add guitar to their production. Normally, I’d shy away from anything of the sort, but the Serbian pair  (producer, DJ Darko Andric and guitarist Igor Despotovic find a way to make it work.

The pair had some success as psytrance producers (also something I tend not to listen to) with a handful of releasing getting huge recognition in that particular community. In 2009 however they decided to try something different and started producing dubstep and drum’n’bass and it seems as though they’ve found their calling.

Serbian Bassline is RIOT 87′s first propper release as a drum’n’bass/dubstep band. The EP consists of 6 tracks, 2 remixes/covers for Gorillaz and AC/DC, and 4 RIOT 87 original tracks, VIP editions of the tracks released last year on psytrance EP Are You Riot! Lucky for you they’ve decided to give the EP away for free (grab it here).

Here are the standouts.

FAR TOO LOUD + THE PRODIGY

The support for the free refixes FAR TOO LOUD has been dropping has been amazing, so Oli Cash thought it would be a good time to offer up one more! This one is aimed firmly at the dancefloor; a peak-time, bass-driven refix of THE PRODIGY‘s “Warriors Dance” which is sure to get hands in the air…or cause physical and mental paralysis.

GLASNOST + METRIC

Houston’s GLASNOST have been one of my favourite purveyors of glimmering robotdisco. They sent us a nice little three-pack of tunes but the one I’m sure you’re most excited about is their remix of METRIC which twinkles in every corner. The track is so bright, beaming really, it’s difficult to imagine hearing this track played in the dark.

Make sure to check out their SoundCloud page for a tonne of downloads. For example…

PS. Holy Cancon, eh? That’s three posts in a row from three subsequent emails.

AXXE + BLOND:ISH + STEPHEN HOFFMAN + DAVE ALLISON

For their debut EP on Montreal house imprint Mile End Records, Mainstream, out November 30, 2010, AXXE serve up an eclectic offering of remixes of their ‘double A-side’ Hard Candy b/w S.A.T.U.R.D.A.Y. Night. The group’s release spotlights the talents of eight local and international producers including Geneva’s Worship, Stockholm’s italo-disco king Neon Workout, and label mates the deep and funky DAVE ALLISON as well as BLOND:ISH & STEPHEN HOFFMAN.

We have the latter two remixes on offer below. Dave Allison goes deep (to be expected) and keeps the funk rolling, albeit he takes a while to get there.

MP3: AXXE – S.A.T.U.R.D.A.Y. Night (Dave Allison’s Disco Dust Dub)

I’m quite fond of the Blond:ish & Stephen Hoffman effort, which goes even deeper into the realms of house music. I can’t wait to play this one.

K + J2 + DJ ASHA

Here’s one for the ginos.

Canadian born K, seriously that’s her stage name, started as a dancer and is relatively new the music game. In 2009 she started collaborating with J2/DJ 2AM and here’s a look at what they’re poppin. This one though, comes with a little remix help from ASHA. I’m sure you’ll hear this one in all the big clubs you can’t get into.

NEW SHY FX REMIX

SHY FX is a jungle legend from England. My first exposure to Jungle & Drum and Bass was from tunes I heard on the radio from him when I was living in Ireland. Dnb/Jungle/Garage tunes feature more predominately on the charts in the UK/Ireland, so the radio follows suit.

In Winnipeg a lot of people have had recent live exposure to his former collaborator T-Pain via the electro/dubstep duo Mr. Sofalumpkins and Dr. Funkinchunkin who have graced us with their presence three times in the last year and a half, plus two appearances at Connect 2009/2010. I was lucky enough to open for em in March of this year. It turned into one of my best live mixes to date. They returned this week, though just with Mr. Sofalumpkins as the ‘Doctor was out’,  due to a knee injury. No word on whether or not he was able to perform the surgery himself :) I was there for the performance at the Pyramid, and it was stellar.

Back on  topic.

Here is a recent remix of the SHY FX colab – RAVER, check out the sample below :)
