This IS A Best Of Post

Thursday, December 31, 2009

But not a very researched one. Actually, that’s a lie. For the last two months when I wasn’t bombarded with homework, I was trying to download EVERY ALBUM I MISSED LAST YEAR. The results? Don’t ever try to do that…
MODERAT
I have one fav. album from last year. MODERAT -- MODERAT (or would you write it MODERAT -- S/T?) on BPitch CONTROL from Germany. It’s got just the right amount of thump blended seamlessly amongst the sappy. I suggest the CD version over the vinyl because the vinyl doesn’t include BEATS WAY SICK featuring BUSDRIVER (On a side note, this years album JHELLI BEAM by BUSDRIVER didn’t quite do it for me). MODERAT are a collaboration between APPARAT & MODESELEKTOR.

The I wish all at the staff at MANALOGUE the best of luck in the New Year and to all the people out there behind the screen…keep listening.

Honourable Mentions:
Applescal -- A Slave’s Commitment [Traum Schallplatten]
The Field -- Yesterday & Today [Kompakt]
Kap Bambino -- Blacklist [Because Music]
Nathan Fake -- Hard Islands [Border Community]
Telefon Tel Aviv -- Immolate Yourself [BPitch Control]
Zombie Nation -- Zombielicious [UKW]

KAP BAMBINO

Come party with me & my crew at Foufounes Électriques! on November 13th for KAP BAMBINO!

Kap Bambino

We all know it’s one thing to be a wizard in the studio but it takes a little something else to get in front of a crowd and just let go.

PANTYRAID

PANTYRAID
I finished all my final exams for school (RECORDING ARTS COLLEGE OF CANADA) this week; time to get my party-on!

Nothing says “party-on” quite like a good ol’ outdoor music festival and we’ve had plenty of them so far. I was lucky enough to catch the GLITCH MOB earlier this year and if you’re into the glitch hop sounds, check out the new album from PANTYRAID called THE SAUCE. It’s got heavy beat, shishy pads, and nice SCRUBSTEP basslines ;)

PS – PANTYRAID are MARTYPARTY and OOAH (of GLITCH MOB fame).

Le Bus

Jackin’-Glitchy-Electro-8bit-Pimp-House…

LE BUS comes to us from Toronto, Ontario and brings a whole lot of awesome to the dance floor. His new album (Fission Friction Frequency) is released tomorrow (July 9th 2009) on SPIRAL RECORDINGS and it sounds like the world was taken over by sentient robots in the ’70’s and have been producing our dance music ever since.

CUBIC ZIRCONIA pumped out the monster track Fuck Work on THE SAVANT GUARD a few weeks ago (with an all-star remix lineup) and LE BUS takes the reigns for a jump & pump electro fueled dance floor stomper.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

TRICERATRON

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Tonight seems to be the night of, um, different material. TRICERATRON make dinosaur electro rap. It appeals to my sense of humour and should to yours too, especially in its 8-bit glory. Really, how could you not like well produced prehistoric-themed music.

HEADS WE DANCE

Monday, November 17, 2008

In celebration of their weekly DJ residency at hot new Leeds electro club night Nailgun, HEADS WE DANCE release a crunchin’ five minute space-disco synth workout titled “The Human Touch” on Monday 24th November. Part 8-bit medly, part grinding monster the latest from HWD should turn the party into furious ball of goo.

Backed by the remastered live favourite, and recent Popjustice Song of the Day, “You Are Never Alone With Model 21″ and mixed by Grammy-winning mix engineer Simon Gogerly (U2, New Order, Gwen Stefani), “The Human Touch” highlights HEADS WE DANCE’s exciting crossover between melodic, dance-influenced pop and futuristic dancefloor-fillers. The b-side is both eerie and soothing and somewhat reminiscent of mid nineties Erasure.

The single will be available on extremely limited 12″ and as a digital download through www.myspace.com/headswedance, with stunning sleeve art by Empire (Miami Horror, Charlie Fanclub) and exclusive remixes by Sidechains, Charlie Fanclub (Work It Baby), Louis La Roche and NeOn.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

THE SHAKE TONIGHT!

Friday, August 29, 2008

I thought the show went pretty well tonight. Started out quite mellow really, and I’m still not sure what to think of the opening track. The setlist went a little something like this:

01. Guns N’ Roses – November Rain (DJ Kue remix)

**by request**
02. Reel 2 Real – I Like to Move it (Smalltown DJs Moving Makes Me Sick Remix)

03. Black Holes – War Drums

**I couldn’t wait for this relase, not this track in particular mind you, but the re-issue of Sunglasses at Night. The original will always ride near the top – and this remix bounces moody cut up electro into a hypnotic dancefloor playpen**
04. Tiga & Zyntherius – Sunglasses at Night (Popof remix 2)

05. The Ting Tings – Great DJ (Calvin Harris remix)
06. The Bumblebeez – Rio (Boy 8-Bit remix)

**by request**
07. MGMT – Kids (Burntpiano’s remix)

08. The Presets – Talk Like That (Dave Spoon’s Televised mix)
09. The Fashion – Like Knives (Daniel Dexter remix)
10. Harris Robotis – Beat on the Street (The Bag Raiders Row Harder Re-boot)
11. Larry Tee – I Love You (Bart B More Secured dub)

**I know I played this track a couple weeks ago, but it’s so effing good! Rave piano and thunder makes me all jumpy like a teenager.
12. Barletta & Van Helder Arrest – STAB

13. Mikix the Cat – Freeze (Drop the Lime remix)

**Another rave track. Gonna have to play it together with the Van Helder Barletta colab and see how they sound.**
14. Dr. Alban – Sing Hallelujah (TMX remix)

15. KMFX – White Knight Boot

RAMBRANDT

Thursday, August 28, 2008

Some 8-bit stylings from RAMBRANDT. This piece doesn’t sound that bad. The thing though, 8-bit shenanigans are fun and all, but I don’t know why people try so hard to make something sound terrible. Back in the day, when I didn’t acutely focus entirely on dance floor rhythms I liked lo-fi, well some of it anyway. Remember ERIC’S TRIP anyone? I admit then, there are occasions when shitty production can still be quite aesthetic. By definition however, 8-Bit soundz limit the maximal goodness of the auditory sepctrum. If you’re going to make the effort to produce something, why not produce something where all the parts sound good?

Am I wrong? Prove it.
