Happy Canada Day!!!

Thursday, July 1, 2010

Sled Island day one was immense! I am beat and broken. Happy Canada Day from me to you! If you’re in Calgary, go check out some bands… if you aren’t then go check some out anyways! This is a remix I did of a tune that is near and dear to my heart, and it being Canada day, I thought posting a remix of a band called “OTTAWAN” would be fitting.

KNIIFEPRRTY – NEW SINGLE

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

KNIIFEPRRTY
was one of the first bands I blogged about for manalogue, so I was excited when they sent along their new single “STAY WILD” which they are selling via their Bandcamp page and can be previewed on soundcloud here:

Maybe drop a little coin for this if you dig it. Speaking of digging and being dug, my buddy and fellow Albertan KUMON PLAZA was recently featured on FORKCAST! Yeah boy! It feels like I know Drake or something… Go download the tune Final Boss, and check out this edit I did for an art opening mix CD of his tune Hans Kruger… Nothing too fancy, just shaving off 3 minutes to make it a little more of a pop-tune…

For all y’all wanting something with more kick to it, mr. BASSNECTAR sent over a MASSIVE ATTACK bootleg to enjoy the solstice by. I believe Bassnectar played this tune (or a version of it) when I saw him at Shambhala a few years back, but can’t say for sure due to my state of mind at the time…

CYCLIST

Monday, June 7, 2010

Here’s a slow robotdisco jam from CYCLIST. As it turns out, it’s the debut release from DUBLUM RECORDS and judging from their roster, this is a label to keep tabs on.

This track though, is rich with retro noodlings and saturated with a bassline that’s all too familiar. Borrowed or not, Cyclist stirs it in so thick its viscous delivery gets stuck in your head. I think those in the video think the same thing.

You can grab the single directly from here or preview the entire EP from the SoundCloud link below. If you like what you hear you can pre-order a CD at http://www.dublum.ca/releases/double-dip-ep for $6. This is the best part – all pre-ordered CDs in Winnipeg will be HAND DELIVERED by Cyclist on, you guessed it, his bicycle. That’s right! he’ll bike to your place and drop it in the mailbox.

So check it out and pass it on!

Will someone get me some DJ gigs so I can play some JOHN ROMAN tunes to people? It’s no fun when it’s just me in my basement with my dog and some glowsticks. Roman is dropping a NEW MIXTAPE soon, so please check these tunes, READ HIS BLOG, and all that stufffffffffffff……

You’ll remember my end of year post for 2009 saying that “Ready for this” was one of my favourite tunes. It still bangs, and it went off like a rocket at the party I DJ’d. Here is that said post, and check Roman’s blog in the coming days for the winner of the “Ready For This” remix competition.

MEME (MANITOBA ELECTRONIC MUSIC EXHIBITION)

Thursday, June 3, 2010

MEME

The MANITOBA ELECTRONIC MUSIC EXHIBITION is the first proper electronic music festival to grace Winnipeg. I admit, I dreamed of organizing something similar so I’m super glad to be part of it.  From June 17 to 20 the city will get their dance on with a huge local DJ showcase opening the festival. LOTEK and Manalogue will throw it down as THE SHAKE. We’ve been tag-teaming for over four years now in the clubs and on our radio show of the same name.

The festival itself will cater to house, techno, and dubstep so I feel a bit compelled to stick to these styles. The thing is though, when Lotek and I play, we’re all over the map so I hope we can continue down that path.

Passes for the four-day event are a steal at only $40. To wet your lips, here are a few tracks that coincidentally came in time for MEME.

My wife still can’t believe I play this track and in fact, opened THE SHAKE with it one week. I love this tune – it embraces dub and all its warmth with enough pans and echoes to keep one floating for days. Find DUBMATIX here.

NOAH PRED carves a different path on his re-working of Dopamine with a darker, noisier vision that is more in line with his own Thoughtless imprint’s interpretation of techno. Science fictional machinations whirl around deep synth pads and a much less amiable version of Jubilee’s original bass line. The results will have dance floors treading through a syrupy haze of early AM speaker dust. Courtesy of HIDDEN RECORDINGS.

This next remix from Noah Pred comes from BLAQ RECORDS. The remix remains mechanical, which is true to form for Pred, but is playful and alive with the warmth of analogue bubbles.

LUCY LO

Monday, May 31, 2010

LUCY LO sent a couple of remixes our way after finding one of her latest tunes found its way onto the last post from YYZ RECORDS. I’m glad she found us because I’m always looking for sultry tech house. Who isn’t right?

The first, I’d say is a bit more techno than house capturing tribal rhythms from digital ancestors. The second track LL gives the remix treatment to fellow Canadians BORRACHO. It’s another tribal gathering although I’d venture to say it goes a bit deeper. Follow the SOUNDCLOUD links if you’d like to take a trip into a dark concrete forest.

JEREMY GLENN + DVAS + LUCY LO + MODERN ARTIFACTS + PANIC BOMBER

Sunday, May 30, 2010

One of my favourite labels last year was a relatively new imprint. YYZ RECORDS out of Toronto sent some brilliant material our way. This year’s no different. Case in point, here’s their latest – a single from JEREMY GLENN inspired by 80s R&B shimmer and gloss. I’m especially fond of the remixes from the package. Here’s the rundown in point form:

  • DVAS takes their interpretation back another decade to a disco playground.
  • LUCY LO drops a touch of acid house into her remix.
  • MODERN ARTIFACTS go deep and slow the jam down.
  • PANIC BOMBER, as indicated by their remix title, takes the track underground.

Fever Ray x Piranha Piranha + Giant45 Mixes

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

MR. GEOGRAPHY and DAN SOLO make PIRANHA PIRANHA. They make dubstep, dnb, and hail from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. You dig? Of course you do! I always blah blah blah about how great they are, and how shocked I am that dubstep and bass music has taken off in this town. On CJSW or in the clubs, a wobble or a n amen break is not such a shocking appearance. This remix mashes the moody slow-down of Fever Ray with the JUMP UP sound of Drum and Bass.

Fever Ray – If I Had A Heart (Piranha Piranha’s Grownup Jumpup Mix) (new link)

Enjoy and all that! Recently Dan Solo recorded a mix at GIANT 45 on 17th ave here in Calgary and shared it with the world…. and now it looks like it’s going to be a regular thing. A-mac hits up Vol. 2 with some tech-ier sounds. ENJOY!

Crystal Castles x Clockwork

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

This is some fun…

I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more CRYSTAL CASTLES remixes as the days heat up, so why not just go ahead and share them? This one from CLOCKWORK rocking out from L.A, not being too serious and not being all kitschy either.

DRAKE + DWIGHT WHITE + HYPER CRUSH

Monday, April 26, 2010

I have to admit, I don’t think I’ve heard the original DRAKE tune, but it doesn’t matter when there are bootlegs like these sent our way.

First, here’s a bootie remix from a local dj / promoter who has exploded in Winnipeg. RIC HARD has his finger in every party pie. The thing that makes this remix stand out is the piano that compliments the solitaire melancholic message in the track. It’s all juxtaposed with maximal punching bag of drums and synth targeting this is one both for the dancefloor and the bedroom.

LA’s HYPER CRUSH take a slightly different approach. They take the sadness and smash it in the teeth with their dancefloor laser beams, transforming the tune into a sleazy electro banger. To top it off, they add their own rhymes.
