THEM JEANS unified the east and west. As a DJ and promoter in L.A. he’s thrown massive parties but is also affiliated with PLANT MUSIC, one of the best labels to sprout up over the last few years. Maybe that’s presumptuous to say, but you can’t disagree with his output.

About seven months ago, he dropped his remix of of MUNK‘s “Down in L.A.” which is rich with robotdisco hooks and a bassline so sweet you want to lick it off the floor. This one’s a mover, especially for the ladies. This week though, Plant released the smash single from Munich’s Munk (aka Mathias Modica). The track was released on GOMMA last year but Plant has a whole new set of remixes including Fantastadon, Them Jeans, Grand Theft and Dan-OH.

Also signed to Finland’s TOP BILLIN’ Them Jeans’ “Balloons” is his first EP with them. It’s a funky-styled house number that has a lead weird enough to make you scrunch up your nose and think, what? Nevermind that though, this single pounds. It’s largely an exploration into the realms of tech house with elements of midnight funk. It’s difficult to pick the standout cut from the pack. The original mix layers basslines like a bricklayer on acid while Andrew Phelan & George Cochrane dig up bleeps and snares from early underground electro. Santiago & Bushido go deep with the kick drum and tweak the keys with a touch of distortion. Taking things even darker, Trillbass shake the track into a dubstep monster.

Dietzche V. and the Abominable Snowman’s French touch will take you on a dangerous and sexy journey of disco, funk, and soul with their bounce-heavy set of emotional and summer-y anthems. Aussie duo BITROK have come a long way since meeting in the front row of an Australian festival crowd in 2005 and deciding to make music together. They’ve voluntarily been locked away in the studio for a well over a year, writing their first studio album “Smoke & Mirrors” producing tracks in the spirit of deep electro, thumping basslines, and stadium guitar smack-downs – all built around the sort of choruses summer festival anthems are made of.

DILLON FRANCIS‘ ode to the Pubahs has a step on the original track’s sexual euphemisms. Well actually, it strips the metaphors entirely but keeps enough of the original to make me feel a little nostalgic. It reminds me of the time I stole a 12″ white label of “Sandwiches” when I was doing contract work at a radio station in Edmonton, Alberta. I probably could have asked for it…the station would never play this record (I don’t even think they had turntables in the studios) so I figured I’d save everyone the trouble.

When I was in university I ran into a friend from high school in a parking lot in my home town. He was in his Dodge Daytona listening to Celine Dion. “The Crystal Axis” is the MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS second album, their first since Dystopia launched the Australian trio into a vortex of global intrigue. For those who’ve arrived late, like me with this post, Andrew Szekeres, Vincent Vendetta and Daniel Stricker had pursued an organic course through multiple indie EPs, singles and retro-futurist videos before they found themselves hailed as de facto pioneers of a perceived new frontier of indie-dance circa 2007/08. The video at the to showcases all of the above.

Midnight Juggernauts on twitter

I don’t think this next tune (or the original) will be as iconic as “My Adidas” but it’s easily just as fun. “Checkin’ Out My Pumas” was released on THE LYTICS debut album last year. LEBEATO ground up the tune into a new electro number with a revving bassline and some vocoder at the top of the track. Unfortunately we can’t give this tune away yet, but watch for the announcement, word is, a download will be available soon.

Here’s a deeper tech house number from Amsterdam’s HOMEWORK which comes courtesy of EXPLOITED RECORDS. This is the first track from their brand new EP. It boarders on Dutch House, but the lads keep things a bit more minimal, and much less annoying meaning it’s a fine selection for dim spaces and those underground parties with its chopped and spliced samples of Middle Eastern pipes, klezmer-ish reeds and gulping vocal snippets all hanging together in an effective, bass-warbling fashion.
