CHECK YR PULSE + JAMALL KNIGHT + BURBS

Thursday, January 21, 2010

One of the reasons (honestly, there are many!) there have been fewer posts is because a mate and I started a weekly. (LOTEK and MANALOGUE have been tag-teaming as THE SHAKE for a few years now.) I feel as though I’m only putting in half the amount of time needed to get this night off the ground, but that’s all I can give at the moment considering other commitments that are a bit more pressing, paying the mortgage for example. If you’re wondering, blogging doesn’t really make any money, well I haven’t figured out exactly how to do it anyway. (Tips are welcome.)

Back to the post. This week I’m pumped to host JAMALL KNIGHT and BERBS. Winnipeg is saturated with djs, and I’d be hard pressed to find any jock in this city I like more than the former. Perhaps it’s because Jamall Knight plays like I/we do – which is a bit all over the place, and every time I’ve seen him behind the decks he consistently drifts to the likes of Proxy, and other noisy producers. Also, big thanks to our freshly minted vj, MRGHOSTY who gives everyone something interesting to look at when they’re dancing or not. This guy’s incredible. I’m totally looking forward to tomorrow!

Like every week though, I have no idea what I’ll lay down but perhaps it might include a schmorasborg like the one below.

CHECK YR PULSE

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

There’s a new weekly club night in Winnipeg. If you haven’t guessed, it’s called CHECK YR PULSE, and well, Manalogue is half responsible for it. I DJ as a duo called THE SHAKE with the super deluxe LOTEK. Our beginning was pretty usual, playing parties for friends and such but we became a little more serious when we started hosting and programming our radio show called THE SHAKE which still keeps its focus by highlighting new dance music of many sorts.

The weekly, will focus a bit more on the underground – that’s where our roots are and every week we’re bringing in guests DJs with a goal of bringing the underground dance community together. To launch the night we have 14 13 local DJs playing, including ourselves. It all goes down tomorrow so if you’re in town, head to PURE. The club recently remodeled and didn’t skimp on the sound. I can’t wait to play there, it’s going to be sick! Here’s the lineup:

Lotek – Bassline/Electro/Robot Disco
Manalogue – Bassline/Electro/Robot Disco
Luis Cardona – House/Tech House
LSDave – Tech House
Nathan Zahn – Deep Tech
L’il Phil – House/Disco/Electro
Sw@t – Bassline
Krisco – Tech House
Encode – Funky Tribal House
SpaM – Breaks/Electro/Fidget
Owen Reynolds – Deep Tech
Voules & Random – Electro Tech

…and now what you came here for in the first place.

READYMIX + THE SHAKE

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

It occurs to me that my promotional skills are lacking a bit in terms of what I’m doing outside of this blog. Every once in a while I’ll post a setlist from THE SHAKE – a weekly radio show LOTEK and I do – but nothing else really appears on this blog. Errrr, what am I doing? Well, I wasn’t flogging myself is the short answer but that’ll change for tonight.

You see, Lotek and I dj every once in a while under using THE SHAKE as our nom de plume. This Thursday we’re starting things off at READYMIX for their Monster Mashup. Incidentally, Readymix goes off every week and Lotek and I are lucky enough to get in on the action for their Halloween party.

All I want to play lately is bassline and wobbly house music, so here’s a spooky number that fits the bill

BURNS + DEADMAU5

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

A week ago my mate LOTEK and I had the pleasure of seeing BURNS and DEADMAU5 when they were in Winnipeg. While the opening disc jockey warmed things up I asked the promoter if I could say hi to Burns and thank him for the guestlist spot. I didn’t make arrangements for an interview so I didn’t bother bringing anything to record the chat but as it turned out, I really wish I did. The 23-year-old remained refreshingly candid, and his personality reflected a casualness normally reserved for close friends This was the first correspondence I’ve had with Burns personally, but by the time he had to go downstairs it felt as though we had a number of previous encounters. The conversation drifted from his upcoming album, to remix work (that can’t be mentioned on these pages…yet), to the current state of djing and clubbing, how Deadmau5 wanted to Burns to tour with him, and how his working relationship with his label, 21-12 and LINUS LOVES formed.

Burns has also been extra busy in the studio turning out mixes for Ladyhawke, Frankmusik and Jack Splash feat Missy Elliot with amazing results. I hope to be able share some of them soon for now here’s what I can give you, followed by a review of the show.

Give Burns love from somewhere like beatport.

REPUBLIC is, without a doubt, the best sounding club in this city – another reason this show kept its appeal despite falling on a Tuesday. The early week show didn’t stop hundreds of people from getting their party on, many of whom did it with their jaws clenched and pupils dilated so it became quite clear early on that this night would be a bit bonkers. By the time Burns made his way to the stage the venue had filled up nicely – something I hadn’t seen in a long time.

A little while earlier Burns noticed the opening dj laying down some really heavy material which we both thought was odd for how early it was. We discussed flow and etiquette and came to the same conclusion. For better or worse, djs can and will play anything they want now. While there are still some who plan the direction and track list for the entire set, Burns confessed that at most he would select a track to open with and go into a set with a direction in mind, but nothing was ever concrete. Picking up on this, Burns opened with some housey material that sparkled with a little 80s glitz, playing some of his own tunes and remixes. He kept the dancefloor moving with a dynamic set that flowed from nu disco to indie-dance-whathaveyou, and ended by preparing the crowd for Deadmau5, laying into some heavy thunder. One point to note too – Burns isn’t a laptop dj. He played a flawless set entirely on CDJs.

Before I knew it, Burns was done and sound technicians had moved his gear to make room for Deadmau5. I was ready to go, but stuck around to see what was going to happen.

When Deadmau5 started, the crowd went bananas. He immediately gave them what the wanted to hear but I thought it was a bit odd that he played hit after hit to open things up. He did it well, using Ableton (I think) and a Native Instruments Maschine and a Lemur by Jazz Mutant. His Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger bootleg was the first track I heard by the Canadian so I was happy to hear it as it was intended to be played, loud.

I really wasn’t that into it though so I left. (Plus there’s the fact that I have a demanding day job that needed my full capabilities at 8:00 in the morning that pulled at my conscious.) I heard afterward from a number of people that Deadmau5 kind of blew his load early with the heavier material and progressed into a bit of a techno set. That would have been great to see, although for this old man it wasn’t suitable for a Tuesday night.

LAZRTAG

Wednesday, July 15, 2009
All the way from L.A. CONFETTI brings LAZRtag to Winnipeg. The producing / remixing / djing pair have been heating up dancefloors for a minute already and with their remix of “Crimewave” hitting the HYPE MACHINE’s Zeitgeist list for 2008 the duo have created a demand for everything they do.
I was lucky enough to see their gear rider for the show. Vinh and Erik embrace the future of djing by doing more than just play records. They’re adding a live production element with the assistance of two M-Audio Trigger Finger midi controllers. The show will be insane. If you’re in Winnipeg, get in on this. We have tickets to give away so holla at us if you’re plan on coming down. Send a polite email to submissions@manalogue.com.

If you care to tune in from outside of Winnipeg, you can stream the show on KICK FM’s website. Incidentally, THE SHAKE djs are opening for LAZRtag.

FELIPPE SENNE + GUX JIMENEZ

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Happy Canada Day! Here on the west coast, the beaches are going to be packed with sun-seekers celebrating our national day. With beaches in mind, here’s a warm and mellow deep-house track by Brazilian DJ/producer FELIPPE SENNE and Columbian composer/producer GUX JIMENEZ. This one should serve equally well whether you’re sprawled out in the sand or shaking it after dark.

NUJAX + MAJOR LAZER + AC/DC

NUJAX

Montréal duo NUJAX (KID LEGIT and GIRL PROBLEMS) have been tearing up dancefloors in la belle province with their SEXTAPE FRIDAYS weekly. Currently working on their first EP, these fine lads have offered up a couple of tracks for your aural pleasure. The remix of MAJOR LAZER’s “Zumbi” intertwines ragga vocals with a grinding synth line, and “Super Duper Fly” delivers some 90’s techno sensibility. Definitely check these guys out if you are fortunate enough to be in the Montréal area – I’m looking at you, Pez.

THE FRAP FRAP FRAPS

The Frap Frap Fraps
I’ll admit I’ve got a thing for Japan. It’s quirky future-pop culture mashed with thick layers of tradition makes one of the most fascinating places on earth (not to mention POCKY!).

Hailing from Tokyo, THE FRAP FRAP FRAPS bring a new dimension to current 80’s electronic disco-rock mindsets. It’s a playful seriousness that’s hard to reproduce and a delight to experience.

KNIIFE PRRTY – THE SQUARE WAVES – AVIAN X – THIEVES LIKE US

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Ok, so I’ll admit I had a huge thing for THE POSTAL SERVICE when I first heard the record. There was something about adding electronic music to the sappy frown music that is DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE that made me smile. Coming from a rock background originally, I really like crossover music, and make time for music that is more for relaxing than clubbing.

While it won’t necessarily mix well at a Manalogue rave, cats like the JUNIOR BOYS, AZEDA BOOTH, DEPECHE MODE, PET SHOP BOYS, SEBASTIEN TELLIER and the like really appeal to my robot brain while still being lyrical. When I realease a record, it’s going to sound a bit like all of these amazing artists, but that is in the future for now.

It is currently the present (unfortunately) so we will have to make due with some sweet tunes to make our lives better:

KNIIFE PRRTY can’t spell very well, but they sent us their EP and I really dig the low BPM jams that are surely making the Windy City proud. I really suggest against using the genre “Emotronic” on their MySpace, but that’s their own thing…

Kniife Prrty – (Let’s Get) Higher

Rocking a CASIO SK-1 before it was “Vintage” is my good friend Jeff King, who not only makes cool electronic music as THE SQUARE WAVES, but has also been in almost every band in Lethbridge, Alberta. He records everything himself and then gets a backing band to play prestigious MUSIC FESTIVALS. The Square Waves have the versatility to bob genres, starting out sounding like “Casiotone for the Delightfully Accompanied” and then moving to “Kevin Shields with a thing for robots”. Listen to this song and be inspired!

The Square Waves – Be The Last Time

Ok, I realize I’m long winded, it’s a curse. To finish up, I was digging through the THIEVES LIKE US MySpace and found they are doing a remix competition for their tune YOUR HEART FEELS. If you’ve got the goods, take a crack at remixing it and become famous!

Thieves Like Us – Your Heart Feels

To finish off this post is a tune for everyone who needs a little more bounce in their music, AVIAN X and KOLT13 make a club ready cover of DEPECHE MODE’s Shake the Disease. Turn this one up and get out of your chair if my other songs put you to sleep.
