YURI’S NIGHT 2013

YURI’S NIGHT is just around the corner! This is one of my favourite events of the year, after all, it’s not every day you get to play in the Manitoba Museum’s Planetarium. As THE SHAKE, Lotek and I have been lucky enough to be part of the Winnipeg event, which is one of hundreds around the planet, since the fist one in 2010.

JFunk, Justin Kace, and Redworm help us out with their space-themed aural adventures and we have mixtapes from them below. The night is always so much fun but the thing is, the Planetarium has a really small capacity so get there early or buy your tickets in advance.

This year is going to be extra special because the Planetarium recently upgraded the facility with a Digistar 5 all-dome projector. I’ve heard tests were amazing. Really looking forward to seeing what JAYMEZ and PIXEL PUSHER will treat us with.

Yuri’s Night commemorates the first human spaceflight by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961 and the inaugural launch of NASA’s Space Shuttle on April 12, 1981. This year marks the 52nd anniversary of Yuri’s flight into space for which the Manitoba Museum is a proud participant in the global night of art, science, and culture of space exploration. In addition to the dance party the night features a space-themed costume contest, cash bar, free pizza, and hands-on science coolness in the Science Gallery.

…and now for the mixes! If you didn’t know LOTEK is the bacon in my breakfast. He shot over his mixtape for MEME submission, appropriately titled MEME Generator. It opens slow, which is one of Lotek’s signatures but gets meaty rather quickly, serving a heavy plate of deep and funky. You’ll dig this one.

I love techno but I rarely listen to it and practically never play it. JUSTIN KACE‘ live mix from DUALBEAT‘s show with Ghosts on Tape, might change that. Love it!

As one of the point men behind BASS INVADERS, Redworm is responsible for bringing some unbelievable shows to Winnipeg. REDWORM‘s sets are something to look forward to because he’s always on top of where things are heading. He normally plays a wide variety of bass music but for this show he tells us he’s shifting things a bit. Unfortunately we don’t have a newer recording for Redworm but take a listen to this anyway – it’ll blow your mind.

Here’s my latest mix. It’s a quick deep house to breaks jaunt.

Sadly too, we don’t have a mix from JFunk, aka Jordan Chester. You need to know this guy though – he’s responsible for bringing some of my favourite djs to Winnipeg. A.Skillz, Krafty Kuts, JFB…the list goes on and on.

INTRODUCING ILL TYPE

ill-type_profile

Our friend ILL TYPE joins the ranks of Manalogians. What better way to introduce him than with his latest mix. It speaks for itself but if you must know, Ill Type is from Winnipeg. He plays a tonne of mid-tempo bass music…and he does it well.

THE REAPERS BALL

Halloween has to one of the best excuses of the year to party as an adult. Suggestive and inappropriate costumes aside, the holiday is always a great time. This year will be no different. In Winnipeg alone there are many options. I’m happy to announce that I’ll participate again, much to my wife’s chagrin.

THE REAPERS BALL features a two-floor event with headliners KJ SAWKA and WILL BAILEY. With 10 of our city’s best purveyors of beats and bass, this is a must-attend soiree.

For those who need to know, KJ Sawka drums for PENDULUM. Oh, those guys. Anyway, dood does some amazing things. Check it out.

For a taste of things here are a few choice cuts from the headliners.

Special thanks to the folks behind Respect the DJ

HARVEST MOON FESTIVAL 2012

The leaves are starting to change colour here in Winnipeg. They litter the ground with their crunchy mess as they fall which cools my spirits slightly. It only means one thing – fall is here.

If there’s any solace it’s that the HARVEST MOON FESTIVAL is right around the corner. It’s closer than that actually. It’s this weekend and it’s what I look forward to most this time of year. The grass roots festival is one of my favourite events of the year, bringing together the pioneering spirit of local, sustainable food and one of the best parties in this little corner of the globe.

For the most part, the Harvest Moon Festival is a roots music gathering featuring some of Manitoba’s finest musicians. (Check the poster above or the festival site for full details.) As half of THE SHAKE, this will be our third year playing and we’re honoured to close the night on Saturday. Even with two years under us, I still don’t know exactly what to play, but it’s going to go something like this…

Two of my favourite local jocks close out Friday too. Beezkneez and ill type will jam it out – I just hope we won’t play any of the same tunes.

MUSIC FIRST PRESENTS: JOKERS OF THE SCENE

I just got word that THE SHAKE is billed to open the JOKERS OF THE SCENE show happening at the Lo Pub tonight. Now I seem like a wanker for doing the post because I’m playing. The truth is I meant to post this long ago. MUSIC FIRST have brought some stellar acts, and what’s coming in the near future is super deluxe! Anyway, it’s going to get sweaty, sweaty tonight so head there early for some bass heavy, techy crunch.

Chromeo “Hot Mess (Jokers of the Scene Remix)” by Jokers of the Scene

Additional support by the one and only PHAZE-M.

Take a peep at some additional and very fine MUSIC FIRST bills here.

10th ANNUAL HARVEST MOON FESTIVAL

This isn’t your usual festival note but one definitely worthy of mentioning. THE HARVEST MOON FESTIVAL is a fairly small gathering that focuses on roots music. Acts like Romi Mayes, Nathan, Ridley Bent, John K Samson, and Christine Fellows are playing this year – all of whom have deep folksy traits – not exactly the right fit for a blog that exclusively showcases electronic music, specific to the beat variety.

Last year was my first forray into this realm. As one-half of THE SHAKE we closed out the Saturday night with a dance party. This year, we’re doing the same only a day earlier (Friday). What’s funny about last year is that LOTEK and I had absolutely no idea what we should play. We both agreed we couldn’t get too techy so in the end, we played a lot of mashups, disco and funk. Thankfully the dance enthusiasts in the crowd ate it and we’re lucky to play again this year.

For a taste of what’s to come, check the players below and click below to buy your tickets.

The most iconic DJ pair Winnipeg has ever known are closing out the festival yet again. DJ HUNNICUTT and DJ CO-OP play are cross-genre playing masters but you can expect to find some funk, soul, hip hop, and probably some originals (Like Tim’s brand new long player out on WOVEN RECORDS).

STRICTLY RHYTHM + KAYLA + BEN WESTBEECH

It’s a bit weird when a few unrelated events simultaneously come together. For example, we received three items – from different sources mind you – all related to the iconic house label, STRICTLY RHYTHM.

First is this clubby mashup of an older Strictly cut with up-and-comer KAYLA (pictured above). Apparently this is a leak which may explain why there’s no download.

Kayla – “Step On It” Vs AFTC – “Tell U Y (Chris Lake Remix)” by megandF

Coming from Strictly themselves, we get a peep at BEN WESTBEECH‘s second single in anticipation of his long player coming out on September 12. “Something for the Weekend” is a house-inspired, disco-tinged number. Gerry Read provides the jazzed-out broken beats while Roska (below) and Ben’s alter ego Breach drop variations on dub step and some retro stabs respectively.

Catch the pre-order here.

Finally, and perhaps for a few bragging rights, we’ve been profiled in Strictly’s Strictly Scene. View the profile here.

Massive shouts go to all our writers, BONAVENTURE, CITY LIMITS, PEZNAKOV, and our fresh recruit CYCLIST. Also, big ups to MEME and the other half of THE SHAKE, DJ LOTEK.
