THE SPANK! is the bass heavy alter ego of Giorgos Fotiadis who you probably already know as one half of BASEMENT FREAKS. Aside from running the Bombastic Jam label, Giorgos has some serious output of his own. His latest, a Manalogue premiere channels the mid-tempo of moombah and cuts it with a subtle vibe from the Middle East.
For more mid-tempo, low end fiya, check these two cuts, fresh from Bombastic Jam’s cookbook.
Last, but definitely not least is Basement Freaks signature mix – number 23 in the Funk The World series. Tropical rays splashed with funk and bass for a party any time of day.
Leeroy Thornhill & Marten Hørger joined forces to bring you SMASH HIFI.
Leeroy spent more than half of his life as a member of band The Prodigy before leaving to pursue a successful solo career as a DJ. Marten had been touring the world as a DJ and producer – hailed as the “future of breakbeat” by DJ Mag. Recently being nominated for no less than five awards at this years Breakspoll.
Both being friends for a long time and sharing a love for bass music and vintage analog equipment they started to craft their own sound somewhere between breaks, bass, funk, hip-hop & jungle. After remixing the likes of Micky Finn, Westbam, Victory Pill and Krafty Kuts their new Feel It EP is set to be the latest release from Instant Vibes. Preview below and grab it on Beatport.
The title track hovers somewhere between ghetto funk, glitch, and moombah. This mid-tempo number stomps out big bass lines that cut through some funky, soul vocals.
The b-side on the EP is a chunky breaks number that’s equally rolling and choppy. Here’s a huge track, electric with energy and a build/breakdown for serious dancefloor frenzy.
One of Winnipeg’s busiest club djs has been in the studio, jamming out remixes and originals, as of late. DJ HOLLYWOD HYPE says he’s going to release something a track every week for 2014. The first in the series is a collaboration with Vancouver producer GDUBZ. The free track is a bootleg of Ball by T.I. and Lil Wayne – it’s a bass heavy moombah/glitch combo. Here we go!
The boys from BASEMENT FREAKS recently returned from a 8500 km, 15 show tour through the east block of Europe. Appropriately titled the “Funk From the Trunk East Block Tour” they succinctly and eloquently recapped the tour here. For me, it was more or less summed up in these few lines.
For every tough moment there was always another one so ridiculously awesome, so freakishly funky we could not help but smile and follow along in our east Block European adventure.
I think many tours, especially ones covering massive distances, could be summarized as such but the entire post is worth a read.
The Freaks kicked off the tour with a free download, so we’ll end with that.
