UNDERHALL + BESTRACK + STEREOHEROES + POLA RIOT + KAPTURE + AMPERSAND

Written by manalogue. Filed under electro, maximal, rave, remix. Tagged , , , , , , . 2 Comments.

UNDERHALL is a new act from the south of France. , Lucas, 20, and Roger, 23, say their influences are balanced beetween electro and house  but since they only sent some grinding chainsaw cuts I’d say they lean a lot more to the former.

Their first EP on On The Fruit Records is so strong they were able to recruit a number of heavyweights for some stellar remixes. It’s difficult to highlight any one track in particular so here they all are, with a maximal payload big enough to crash dancefloors world wide.

BURNS + DEADMAU5

A week ago my mate LOTEK and I had the pleasure of seeing BURNS and DEADMAU5 when they were in Winnipeg. While the opening disc jockey warmed things up I asked the promoter if I could say hi to Burns and thank him for the guestlist spot. I didn’t make arrangements for an interview so I didn’t bother bringing anything to record the chat but as it turned out, I really wish I did. The 23-year-old remained refreshingly candid, and his personality reflected a casualness normally reserved for close friends This was the first correspondence I’ve had with Burns personally, but by the time he had to go downstairs it felt as though we had a number of previous encounters. The conversation drifted from his upcoming album, to remix work (that can’t be mentioned on these pages…yet), to the current state of djing and clubbing, how Deadmau5 wanted to Burns to tour with him, and how his working relationship with his label, 21-12 and LINUS LOVES formed.

Burns has also been extra busy in the studio turning out mixes for Ladyhawke, Frankmusik and Jack Splash feat Missy Elliot with amazing results. I hope to be able share some of them soon for now here’s what I can give you, followed by a review of the show.

MP3: The Toxic Avenger – Toxic is Dead (Burns remix)

Give Burns love from somewhere like beatport.

REPUBLIC is, without a doubt, the best sounding club in this city – another reason this show kept its appeal despite falling on a Tuesday. The early week show didn’t stop hundreds of people from getting their party on, many of whom did it with their jaws clenched and pupils dilated so it became quite clear early on that this night would be a bit bonkers. By the time Burns made his way to the stage the venue had filled up nicely – something I hadn’t seen in a long time.

A little while earlier Burns noticed the opening dj laying down some really heavy material which we both thought was odd for how early it was. We discussed flow and etiquette and came to the same conclusion. For better or worse, djs can and will play anything they want now. While there are still some who plan the direction and track list for the entire set, Burns confessed that at most he would select a track to open with and go into a set with a direction in mind, but nothing was ever concrete. Picking up on this, Burns opened with some housey material that sparkled with a little 80s glitz, playing some of his own tunes and remixes. He kept the dancefloor moving with a dynamic set that flowed from nu disco to indie-dance-whathaveyou, and ended by preparing the crowd for Deadmau5, laying into some heavy thunder. One point to note too – Burns isn’t a laptop dj. He played a flawless set entirely on CDJs.

Before I knew it, Burns was done and sound technicians had moved his gear to make room for Deadmau5. I was ready to go, but stuck around to see what was going to happen.

When Deadmau5 started, the crowd went bananas. He immediately gave them what the wanted to hear but I thought it was a bit odd that he played hit after hit to open things up. He did it well, using Ableton (I think) and a Native Instruments Maschine and a Lemur by Jazz Mutant. His Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger bootleg was the first track I heard by the Canadian so I was happy to hear it as it was intended to be played, loud.

I really wasn’t that into it though so I left. (Plus there’s the fact that I have a demanding day job that needed my full capabilities at 8:00 in the morning that pulled at my conscious.) I heard afterward from a number of people that Deadmau5 kind of blew his load early with the heavier material and progressed into a bit of a techno set. That would have been great to see, although for this old man it wasn’t suitable for a Tuesday night.

SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO + DADA LIFE

The Swedish duo DADA LIFE have been in the habit of remixing some of their favourite tunes and playing the bootlegs in their sets. The results have proven fruitful so luckily they’ve shared the latest with blogs worldwide.

Here then is the 10th “Guerrilla Fart,” with deep and cavernous kick drums, hand claps, and acid tweakery to knock you back to 1996.

THE TRUTH IS…

Written by manalogue. Filed under bass, electro, house, maximal, rave, remix, wobble. Tagged , , , , , , . 2 Comments.

Honestly, I don’t mean to be truant for so long. The life of a part-time blogger is tough, plus sometimes I just want to play tunes instead of writing about them (and other times I played a few shows (Villains was fun fun fun), and still other times I just went to shows (Datarock was so good), but most of the time I need to focus on other things). I do feel guilty though, like I’m not holding up my end of the bargain. Trust me though, you’re still getting the better deal.

NROTB & GOOD BYE MTL

Written by Bonnaventure. Filed under cancon, club, rave, remix. 4 Comments.

One of the reasons I haven’t been posting lately is that I have been moving back to my home province of Alberta. I was in Montreal for over a year and loved it like a second home. I’ll be taking Calgary and area like a villain (hopefully), but until I make my big break I’ve got some tunes for you.

NROTB or Nu Ravers on The Block have been flexing their dancefloor muscles around Montreal for a while now, and played with some of the best. I’m upset I didn’t get more of a chance to see them live, but here is a bit of a make-up…

The boys just released Droplet to the blogosphere and when I asked them if I could blog it, they sent me a good cross section of their other works as well. Droplet is nice and moody, while Miam Miam has a great pac-man sample that reminds me of the first rave I went to when I was still too young to buy beer (but is still fresh enough for any club night).

DYLAN RHYMES & PABLO DECODER

Written by manalogue. Filed under electro, maximal, rave, remix. Tagged , , , , , , . No comments.

DYLAN RHYMES & PABLO DECODER sent over this floor burner with enough maximal grind packed in the short track to ignite dancefloors in seconds. The release comes courtesy of LOT49 RECORDS.

‘Kemptown’ is a full blooded, roof raising slice of electro tech madness with the trademark Dylan Rhymes production providing the perfect base for Decoders off the hook vocals. Distorted, twisted synths mesh with a solid rhythm track and driving percussion to create and energy filled vortex of a record that draws in all in it’s path.

Alongside the original version, there is a dub for those that prefer things vocal free, and then there are the remixes. First in the saddle is fellow tech funk legend and co-label owner Mark Pember AKA Meat Katie who strips things back and turns in a searing slab of techno in his own inimitable style. Bringing the vocal to the fore over sparse sections of the back tracking before cutting in with an intense barrage of rough riffs this mix is bound to create dancefloor devastation wherever it’s dropped. Next up we have Barcelona based DJ Memo. A regular fixture on the Spanish festival scene he found himself playing alongside Dylan Rhymes some years ago and now joins the Lot49 team to provide this full bore cut and paste re-edit that is a superb addition to the package. The penultimate mix comes from London Swede Peo de Pitte who chops into the original and creates a bouncing groove laden version that is sure to please breaks and house heads alike. Finally we have awesome Sharooz who shows that he more than lives up to the hype with this outstanding production. A great mix that draws out the parts into seven minutes of wonderfully atmospheric electro tinged house.

BURNS + KASABIAN

Written by manalogue. Filed under electro, house, rave, remix. Tagged , , . No comments.

The UK’s dancefloor heart-throb BURNS is set to release his third EP, just in time for the end of summer. As the daylight hours shorten for those of us who inhabit northern locations we’re psychologically preparing to hibernate (okay, maybe it’s just me) and this EP will help make those long nights seem much shorter. The EP features three tracks with remixes from Fred Falke and His Majesty Andre. Here’s the title track, full of acid and enough skittering piano to stay in perpetual motion.

…and just in case you missed this, Burns remixed KASABIAN‘s “Where Did All The Love Go.” BREASTFED / 21:12 RECORDS father figure calls it “the best remix of a rock band since Justice reconstructed Franz Ferdinand? …maybe?”

No 1 hour treks to the site, no mud, no camping, no re-mortgage plans needed to finance your fun… and just about every electronic genre is covered across 4 stages in the glorious sunshine! THE BLOODY BEETROOTS

Written by manalogue. Filed under bass, electro, epic, maximal, rave. Tagged , , , , , , , , , . No comments.

In case you forgot, THE BLOODY BEETROOTS release their debut long player, “ROMBORAMA” tomorrow. I don’t have a lot to go from other than the two latest singles and the schwack of EPs and remixes coming from the Italian duo. DIM MAK however, describes the album like this.

This is the fusion of two concepts, describing Sir Bob Cornelius Rifos anarchical musica opera. The album destroys the notion of musical genre, expanding the meaning of Music in a period in which this term is in serious jeopardy. In this collection of twenty original tracks, the only common denominator is electronic. It is a journey into the mind of Sir Bob, oscillating between techno, punk, classical and baroque, soundtrack for film, house, italo-disco and hip hop.

Each song has its own inner world, explored with the help of featured artists of the calibre of Justing Pearson (All Leather), Lisa Kekaula, The Cool Kids, Beta Bow, Cecile, STEVE AOKI, J*Davey, and Vicarious Bliss.

The single, “Awesome” featuring THE COOL KIDS, was released on July 27th. Grab your copy from your preferred retailer if you haven’t already.
