DAN PRICE – SYCOPHANT [FRACAS MUSIC]

I’m feeling a bit late to the party on this one, as this EP has been sitting here begging me to review it for far too long. Released on 29 April, Sycophant is the first single on the label after the much touted album from label boss Dan Price to introduce the label.

Dan Price – Sycophant (Original Mix) has a nice chuggy undertone, with beautifully syncopated deep drums, making for an overall quality tune. Alex Costa is on remix duty for the second tune of the EP, bringing his signature high energy, serious techno vibe to the original. Properly tweaking for the late late night crowd, the breakdown in the remix trims down to next to nothing before giving a gut punch worth of bass.

The truly nice thing about this EP is that both the remix and original could have a place in my sets, purely dependent on just how riled up the crowd are at that point.

Keep on the watch for big things from Fracas and Dan Price…I’ve heard of some major compilation inclusions for his recent releases, and I’m sure that is just the tip of the iceberg.

WINNIPEG WEDNESDAY: SAVANT SHOW REVIEW

SAVANT said it best when he described his musical process as such… “Imagine you have a backyard pool, and you fill that shit with music, and you stir it up like a cocktail. Then you reach your hand in and pull out a bunch of ideas, styles, genres and you make it all together. That’s how my brain works; it puts all this different crazy shit into this pool.”

That is the best way to describe the experience of his music live. It’s like diving head first into that pool of lights, color and sound. You can’t help but get swept up in the infectious atmosphere.  The “Vario” virus swept the dance floor as people dressed like, Mario, Luigi, Zelda and other video game characters and danced into the wee hours of the morning. Heavy, metallic bass filled the room and resonated in your chest.

Aleksander’s stage presence is electric and demanding. You can feel his excitement and the love he feels for his fans. Donning his trademark Guy Fawkes mask, Aleksander becomes his true Savant, partying with his fans whilst working his ass off to give us that infectious sound we so badly crave.

For those of you who were at the show, you already know it was AMAZING. While we’re on the topic, let’s give a huge shout out to our friends at BassFace and Big Bass such a stellar event. The venue was great, Pampanga Banquet hall is spacious, making way for the arch of video screens surrounding the stage. Raised platforms with neon hoop dancers dressed as a very enticing Mario and Luigi duo. The fans couldn’t have been more appreciative, this having been Alexsander’s second public show in North America. He loved the atmosphere and was very excited about how energetic and inviting his fans were.

I had the privilege of an interview with Aleksander after his performance. With nowhere else quiet to go we took refuge in the kitchen (also doubling as the coat check). Aleksander is so full of energy and was still in his zone, he described his brain like a “snow globe” that has just been shaken. After a quick debrief we got to business. The following is my interview with Aleksander Vinter, who we all love and know as Savant.

Q: What is your creative process for making music?

A: I have to be happy; when I’m happy I have no trouble making music. I don’t think when I make music it just happens. It’s all intuitive, like when you close your eyes and dream, everything comes natural.

Imagine you have a backyard pool, and you fill that shit with music, and you stir it up like a cocktail. Then you reach your hand in and pull out a bunch of ideas, styles, genres and you make it all together. That’s how my brain works; it puts all this different crazy shit into this pool.

Q: Of the many different genres of music you have made, what are your favorites?

A: That’s the thing, my favorite genre or song would be the song that contains the most genres possible, changing constantly.

Q: What genres are you interested in trying next?

A: Country music probably, I have tried that, we just came from Atlanta and I was influenced by some Atlanta hillbillies. Whenever I meet people that aren’t into my shit I want to prove to them I can make music. They don’t think people who do techno can do music and I hate that shit, and it’s not true. Give me a piano, guitar, drum kit or whatever I will kill them with that shit. I haven’t worked with an orchestra yet, although I have written a lot of symphonies. I have not had the opportunity to work with them yet and hear it being played to me with a big orchestra.

Q: I heard you have recently been working with Infected Mushroom?

A: Yes recently I worked on a track with them for their new EP. Our track is a mix between Pystrance and Dubstep, it’s so intense and layered, it has 80 layers of music.

Q: What makes you happy?

A: Love make me happy, yeah know, not sex love, love, love, like when people care. When you feel an unconditional love for everyone, yeah know. When you don’t hate anyone, that’s when I love making music, when I love everyone.

Q: Do you feel that unconditional love from your fans?

A: Yeah, now it’s getting crazy though, super crazy, I’m really trying to get my head around this stuff. The first really crazy guy I met was in Switzerland. He came up to the stage and gave me a ecstasy pill, then he gave me his necklace, and then he gave me another ecstasy pill, then he started to undress. (Laughs.)

Then in Vienna I have these dudes come all the way from Germany, that’s like an eight-hour drive just to see me live. They printed their own shirts from one of my songs “No time for pussy”. It had princess peach crying on the front and at the bottom it said GAME OVER. I gave that to my girlfriend, suiting as shit.

Q: How has your production techniques changed over time and with new technology?

A: Oh yeah, the thing is, when you have an instrument like a guitar, that is simple stuff. But when you plug that guitar into the computer, you can do ANYTHING you want with that stuff now. The software now can do so, so many things. It’s not what you can do, it’s what you can’t. The list is very small.

Q: How long, on average, does it take to produce a track?

A: Well, I was in Thailand in December; I had a really good time there, I think I made almost a whole album while I was there 6-10 tracks. About 3-6 hours for standard EDM track for me, but an album I will usually spend weeks on because I want it to be perfect. I work on all of the songs at the same time, like I have the album laid out in my head a-z. Like when you listen to old rock albums like AC/DC Back in Black, stuff like that. You have a feeling, listen to the whole album from a-z every track has its moments, its groove and feeling. It escalates and goes back down, it’s dynamite, groovy. I have moods in my head, I want to fill those quotas, and then it becomes a symphony or an album. No planning, no fore thought, its like jumping off a cliff, you just do it.

Q: What is your favorite program to use? How do you use it differently than other musicians that makes your music stand out?

A: I use FL Studio, they have actually sponsored me, now I am a power user with them. They emailed me and said hey dude we want you to represent us.

ANTONIO CABALLERO – TIME EP

Here’s a great offering of Techno and Tech House goodness from ANTONIO CABALLERO and a bevy of accomplished remixers.  The remixes of Time, as well as the original mix, compliment each other well and they are each suited for different moods.  This is a great quality for an EP as remixes can often be too monotonous and similar.

The original sets the mood nicely with a grooving tribal Detroit Techno flavour and the Fumikazu Kobayashi Remix lightens things up with a loungey, melodic interpretation.  The Tech House reboot from D’Malicious (AKA Tiger Stripes) and the Deletech Remix from the Columbian duo Uron, however, get my support for full-on late night mayhem.

Set your watch for the Time EP, due out October 24th, 2012 on PARITY RECORDS.

JOHN NORMAN – JUNE CHART

For those looking for solid techno and tech house suggestions on a monthly basis, I recommend checking out my monthly chart. It is hosted on Beatport and Resident Advisor, and will also have variations on JunoDownload and Sattelite Records (Variations due to distribution differences across the sites). I will do my best to post it here regularly for you too.

Each month I select the 10 tracks coming up that I think will move dance floors. This month I seem to have a chuggy, laid-back sunshine feel – likely due to the gorgeous weather we saw here in London at the end of May…totally has me ready for summer! Give me some sunshine, techno and beer!

A couple favourites that stand out even among the top 10 this month are:

JP Chronic – Burning Man [RED ELEVEN]: I tried a few years ago to get this guy to Winnipeg, but Visa challenges meant it wasn’t possible. Since then, he has blown up on the Ibiza scene with releases and residencies gaining increased acclaim. This track is pure chugging excellence.

Adam Port – Sally [PLAY IT DOWN] : This has a very old-school summery groove to it, and a GREAT vocal.

Will Addict – No Pasaran (John Norman Remix) [7 STARS]: A little shameless self-promotion never hurt anyone. This track has a nice groove you can totally imagine dancing to in the sunshine. I am dancing right now.

Fuldner vs Pooley – Zoana (David Herrero Mix) [STEREO COOL]: This track just screams summer. Listen to it and try to disagree with me.

Alexander Fog Presents We Are Darkstar Vol. 1

I have been sitting on this in my inbox for far too long, and apologize to the tech-heads out there. Darkstar and sister label TMR have been increasingly part of my arsenal in the last year or so, releasing quality dark tunes with frightening regularity. Their tunes are getting regular attention from major techno players – they are definitely a label to pay attention to. Video preview the release HERE -

The major tune for me on this release is Michael Deep’s Want 2 (original mix), a moody and dark deep track that you can’t help but groove to. This is an essential tune for late-evening outdoor sets, grooving as the sun fades on the horizon in the warm air.

All of the tunes are solid, but other stand outs include Miguel Katas and Andrew500 Float (original mix) and Michael Deep Tokio (Alexander Fog 5am Remix). The full compilation is available to preview on Soundcloud.

The full tracklist for the EP is
1. Alexander Fog – The Lost Gate (Original Mix)
2. Michael Deep – Want 2 (Original Mix)
3. Mindhacker – Cupcake Confession (Original Mix)
4. Justin Jay – Stockholm Syndrome (Original Mix)
5. Maxim Lany – Laube (Original Mix)
6. Oddvar – Well Shaked Mix (Original Mix)
7. Miguel Katas & Andrew500 – Float (Original Mix)
8. Andrea Mattioli & Danilo Cris – Melody – (Original Mix)
9. Michael Deep – Tokio (Alexander Fog 5AM Remix)
10. Justin Jay – Stockholm Syndrome (Alexander Fog Remix)

JUSTIN MARTIN – GHETTOS & GARDENS

To say I’m a fan of electronic dance music (although I do deplore the term EDM) is a colossal understatement. and this blog started as an outlet to share my affection. The very casual, part-time affair has grown since the first post in the summer of 2006 and with that growth came moderate success – purely due to the artists, producers, labels, and tunes featured on these pages. The blog evolved into a cog of a small portion of the music industry such that we receive an unmanageable number of emails – a figurative shit-tonne of submissions – so I normally don’t post material that’s not sent our way. I’d like to take a break from industry tonight, go back to the roots as it were, to focus on one album we didn’t receive any promo for.

Ladies and gentlemen (but probably mostly gentlemen), here is JUSTIN MARTIN’s Ghettos & Gardens.

The first time I heard JUSTIN MARTIN was back in 2006. The Martin Brothers (Justin and Christian) released The Martin Brothers EP on DIRTYBIRD – I fell in love with the a-side of this EP. To this day, “Stoopit” is probably my favourite and most often played tune. I’ve been following the likes of The Martin Brothers since.

On with it then.

Justin Martin’s latest Ghettos & Gardens dropped on Dirtybird earlier this week. As the title hints at, the entire album explores a dichotomy between melody and wumph. The opening track, “Hood Rich” starts with a brief booty rap cut into some ethereal strings, which build to a deep kick and subtle break. It’s followed up with a bassline so emotive it nearly brings tears to the eyes.

The second track, which also happens to be the second single, “Don’t Go” continues the trend. Although one might argue there is considerably less wumph, it still pounds albeit with a heart full of melancholy. “Butterflies” is considerably more gentle with its electro funk but manages to remain thick and chunky enough to stop the flow of water. “Molokini” follows a similar pattern except it progresses into a paralyzing dancefloor bomb.

The extended intro of the title track sweeps into a solid 4/4 before a crescendo of filters, then crashes into the  big bass known to Dirtybird. This tune is big and the basslines are even bigger. One would think the repeated themes of beauty and power would grow tiresome, yet it’s done with diversity. Track after track is full of these gracious builds and jaw-dropping sonics. Justin Martin takes Goldie’s classic, “Kemistry” into territories where most bass hounds would hide with their tails between their legs. “Ruff Stuff” elogantly layers bass and beauty. Then there’s “Riding Spaceships,” a cosmic journey into Miami bass with Leroy Peppers (yes, that’s Christian).

Grab the album from beatport or snag some additional swag from bandcamp.

MR GROOVE + VERGAS + MIKE DELINQUENT PROJECT

Mr. Groove & Vergas have worked together since 1997. Nearly 15 years later, the duo is still on top form. For their latest they’ve joined forces with Inusa Dawuda, a world renowned Afro-funk artist known for his instrumental and vocal prowess. Out on CHAMPION RECORDS the single is set to occupy dancefloors with a remix package to follow.

The debut track off of the remix album comes from much hyped garage proudcer, Mike Delinquent Project, who adds a nice UK garage kick, plenty of wobble and a twisted beat that’s fully charged with future bass and throwback stabs from yesterday.

Another must-hear tune from Mike Delinquent Project!
