CHECK YR PULSE + JAMALL KNIGHT + BURBS

Thursday, January 21, 2010

One of the reasons (honestly, there are many!) there have been fewer posts is because a mate and I started a weekly. (LOTEK and MANALOGUE have been tag-teaming as THE SHAKE for a few years now.) I feel as though I’m only putting in half the amount of time needed to get this night off the ground, but that’s all I can give at the moment considering other commitments that are a bit more pressing, paying the mortgage for example. If you’re wondering, blogging doesn’t really make any money, well I haven’t figured out exactly how to do it anyway. (Tips are welcome.)

Back to the post. This week I’m pumped to host JAMALL KNIGHT and BERBS. Winnipeg is saturated with djs, and I’d be hard pressed to find any jock in this city I like more than the former. Perhaps it’s because Jamall Knight plays like I/we do – which is a bit all over the place, and every time I’ve seen him behind the decks he consistently drifts to the likes of Proxy, and other noisy producers. Also, big thanks to our freshly minted vj, MRGHOSTY who gives everyone something interesting to look at when they’re dancing or not. This guy’s incredible. I’m totally looking forward to tomorrow!

Like every week though, I have no idea what I’ll lay down but perhaps it might include a schmorasborg like the one below.

This IS A Best Of Post

Thursday, December 31, 2009

But not a very researched one. Actually, that’s a lie. For the last two months when I wasn’t bombarded with homework, I was trying to download EVERY ALBUM I MISSED LAST YEAR. The results? Don’t ever try to do that…
MODERAT
I have one fav. album from last year. MODERAT -- MODERAT (or would you write it MODERAT -- S/T?) on BPitch CONTROL from Germany. It’s got just the right amount of thump blended seamlessly amongst the sappy. I suggest the CD version over the vinyl because the vinyl doesn’t include BEATS WAY SICK featuring BUSDRIVER (On a side note, this years album JHELLI BEAM by BUSDRIVER didn’t quite do it for me). MODERAT are a collaboration between APPARAT & MODESELEKTOR.

The I wish all at the staff at MANALOGUE the best of luck in the New Year and to all the people out there behind the screen…keep listening.

Honourable Mentions:
Applescal -- A Slave’s Commitment [Traum Schallplatten]
The Field -- Yesterday & Today [Kompakt]
Kap Bambino -- Blacklist [Because Music]
Nathan Fake -- Hard Islands [Border Community]
Telefon Tel Aviv -- Immolate Yourself [BPitch Control]
Zombie Nation -- Zombielicious [UKW]

ELITE FORCE + CASPA

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

In February, ELITE FORCE releases a landmark album of re-fixes, mashups & re-edits appropriately titled ”RE:VAMPED.” There were some cracking reworks that U&A were unable to get licensed for the album, so they decided they would do a series of free downloads under the ‘PRE:VAMPED’ banner, prior to it’s release. This is the second in the series – a re-fix of the TC/CASPA ‘Where’s My Money?’ has single-handedly kickstarted a dubstepbreaks evolution that only seems natural. This remix of a remix is deadly! Elite Force combines the super powers of wobble and breakbeat dancefloor destroyer. I can’t wait to play this one.

AC SLATER

Sunday, December 6, 2009

It’s the end of the year and I’m starting to put together a list of best of material for 2009. AC SLATER will be on that list for remixes and original material, after all he has a catalogue running thick enough to build a bomb shelter with. Here though, is the latest from the Philly native. It’s what you come to expect from the lad: round bubbly bass so thick it gets stuck in your teeth with a really nice surprise too.

MP3: AC Slater -- Play the Record Again ♥♥♥

This track is a bit too cheeky to make the year’s best list although AC (Aaron Clevenger) does take a nice stab at Henry Rollins and his ignorant, unfunny comedy. The sketch below is like spreading hatred for anything not rock and roll so thanks Mr. Clevenger for letting us all laugh at a punk rock douche bag.

DECIBEL + FOAMO

Monday, November 23, 2009

Since FOAMO’s remix competition for “Wardance” there have been more than a few interpretations floating about. Here’s one endorsed by the 22 star producer, unfortunately it missed the cut-off deadline. DECIBEL cut up the track molded some thunder out of the low end.

Pirahna Pirahna , Modern Math , THERINSEOUT

Saturday, November 7, 2009

I was away in Montreal when it all happened, but Dubstep got big in Calgary. I showed up and quickly invited to a new night, featuring DJs I have never heard of, at a bar I didn’t know existed. None of this was all that surprising, Calgary turned in to a different city in the past 5 years, and the change has been well worth the return. Now I am devoted student of Modern Math.

Enter THERINSEOUT.COM and their weekly dubstep night, MODERN MATH. In addition to sick alliteration, the Rinse Out boys have a night filled with bass, booze and dancing. The recurring DJs Dan Solo and Mr. Geography have come together to produce some homegrown dubstep they can really be proud of. Calling themselves PIRANHA PIRANHA, Dan Solo and Mr. Geography have produced something that has gotten them the attention of heavyweight RUSKO, opening for his set at the HIFI on November 21st.

Check the sick wobble here:

If that doesn’t convince you, you’ll just have to go down to the Lord Nelson bar and swim with us in the deep end of bass, while Dan Solo, Mr. Geography and many special guests make waves.

READYMIX + THE SHAKE

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

It occurs to me that my promotional skills are lacking a bit in terms of what I’m doing outside of this blog. Every once in a while I’ll post a setlist from THE SHAKE – a weekly radio show LOTEK and I do – but nothing else really appears on this blog. Errrr, what am I doing? Well, I wasn’t flogging myself is the short answer but that’ll change for tonight.

You see, Lotek and I dj every once in a while under using THE SHAKE as our nom de plume. This Thursday we’re starting things off at READYMIX for their Monster Mashup. Incidentally, Readymix goes off every week and Lotek and I are lucky enough to get in on the action for their Halloween party.

All I want to play lately is bassline and wobbly house music, so here’s a spooky number that fits the bill

UDY + MUNGO BAOBAB + LIQUID

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Photo from VICE

All I’ve been listening to (well all I want to listen to) lately is bassline house and wobble. Can you blame me? It only seems appropriate then to give tribute to one of the sounds’ roots. Thank you dubstep. Your influence on dance music has gone deeper (pun intended) than anyone ever imagined.

Here then, are three cuts to mash your teeth with from KISS MY BASS via UDY and MUNGO BAOBAB (sorry no link – this dood’s a mystery), including OMG, a deadly remix of LIQUID’s rave classic “Sweet Harmony.” As PEZNAKOV (where is that guy anyway?) will tell you, I was aurally nourished with XL Recordings compilations in the mid 90s. You see, way back when it was really difficult to get your hands on decent tunes in the sleepy prairie town I grew up in.

BULIMIATRON (or BUL!M!ATRON)

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Some revved up action from LA’s BUL!M!ATRON and DSKOTEK. Check them out at a show near you – it looks like they know how to get their groove on. The “Stab Attack” EP drops sometime this month on BLACKLABEL RECORDS with a tonne of hot remixes, although this one didn’t make the cut.

UDY + MUNGO BAOBAB

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Let’s help UDY out with this one. Besides giving this tune some love in yer sets / iPhone / mum’s hifi, Udy wants to know where the acapella came from. The wobble is a result of a colab with a producer Udy worked with before. Now Mungo Baobab does his own thing but keeps his identity a secret and apparently Mungo found the acapella but no one knows where it originated.
