WINNIPEG WEDNESDAY: ROARING 2020s

roaring_2020s_2_WEB

So, some mates and I are throwing our second swing party and it’s going down this Saturday. The first one (last November) was easily the most rammed, all-locals show I’ve seen and was definitely one of the best shows I’ve played, let alone partied at. We’re hoping the excitement continues, obviously.

You can grab the details in the poster above but if you need more check the facebook event here.

Roaring 2020s: electro swing, gypsy house, Balkan beats, Bulgarian basslines, breakbeat jive, presented by Memetic
With Nathan Zhan, Chris Komus, Lotek + Manalogue (The Shake)
$10 advance or $12 at the door
The Pyramid Cabaret
Doors open at 9:00

I plan on playing more mid-tempo bass, kinda like this:

Once again there will be prizes for best costume…check these photos to see what you’re up against.

STANTON WARRIORS – WHERE’S THE BEEF?

stantonwarriors-mpc2

I’m always amazed how STANTON WARRIORS can consistently produce tunes that sound distinctly theirs yet progressive and relevant to what’s happening all around them. Without having any insight into their production techniques, the critical element (for me) of the Warriors’ tunes seems to be their mastery of the MPC and the 808. The kick drums and basslines always drive their beats with such rich and lush low end that can’t be found anywhere else. Both cuts in the Where’s the Beef? single, the title track and “MPC” are prime examples. Don’t believe me? Check out the videos by the DANCEFLOOR OUTLAWS below – Your ears won’t lie.

The single drops on April 29. Grab the pre-order from Juno.

Oh, and you gotta check out their latest mix too. It’s a stripped down mix of bass & beats they made to compliment their new Stanton Sessions 4 compilation which is being released in various territories around the world this month. To be expected there’s the afformentioned 808 breaks, but there’s a some garage influences and some custom edits (that I’d give my left nut for) too.

Finally, if you missed these, for shame. Get on it. We’ll start with a free download, then the PLUMP DJs remix of “New York.”

WINNIPEG WEDNESDAY: WICK-IT THE INSTIGATOR

wick-it_winnipeg

Can’t complain much with the number of touring djs making their way to Winnipeg. One act coming through our small city is none other than WICK-IT THE INSTIGATOR. The Nashville native wraps up his Canadian tour in Winnipeg on Saturday, April 27. Seeing how the kids here maintain a healthy bass diet, I’m sure Wick-It will serve up a massive buffet.

The show is at The Zoo and tickets will run you $15 if you grab them in advance. Otherwise they’re $20 at the door. Get there early though to check out the locals. Check the Facebook event for more details.

If Wick-It’s productions are anything to judge his live performances by, I’m sure you’ll be wobbling well into Sunday.

XAVIER RUDD + LANCE HERBSTRONG – THE MOTHER [FREE DL]

lance herbstrong xavier rudd

Austin trio, LANCE HERBSTRONG, have maintained an element of funk in their tunes and at times accented it with a bit of ghetto. They’re not ones to follow patterns either, releasing material as diverse as weedsmoke – they graft the guts from a spectrum of influences into something unexpected.

Lance Herbstrong, are back at it again, fusing Xavier Rudd and a glitchy backbone with a history of space travel.

INTRODUCING ILL TYPE

ill-type_profile

Our friend ILL TYPE joins the ranks of Manalogians. What better way to introduce him than with his latest mix. It speaks for itself but if you must know, Ill Type is from Winnipeg. He plays a tonne of mid-tempo bass music…and he does it well.

TIMOTHY WISDOM – GET YOUR HANDS UP REMIXES EP

timothy wisdom get your hands up remixes

As promised earlier, here’s a proper post for TIMOTHY WISDOM‘s Get Your Hands Up Remixes EP. It’s out on Bombastic Jam as a beatport exclusive.

The standout is obviously NYNFUS CORPORATION‘s remx of “Black n Tan” which takes the stomp from the original and smashes it. Not getting tired of this tune anytime soon.

If you’re after something a little more into the Ghetto Funk tradition, DJ AKA has you covered. Plus, there’s a dub of this remix too.

…and if you like that moombah vibe, THE SPANK! is your man. The EP includes a dub of this mix too, you know, sans vocals.
