It’s too bad I used the sugary metaphor on the last post. Regardless, here’s something a bit unusual from Toronto’s CANDY COATED KILLAHZ. They say they want you to meet their dark side because they can’t be day-glo 90s all the time.

Peter from JAPATTACK sent this my way. He’s pretty pumped about the remix and says ANORAAK give him musical boners. This remix is pretty sexy. It keeps the soft tones of the original and makes it more floaty. Yes floaty - it’s a technical term used by music journalists for songs that drift lightly. In particular the whipped synth layers rest on top of sugary melodies so be careful because overconsumption of this one might cause a toothache.
I’ve been searching for music for my wife. She says she’s sick of everything and really tired of the my technocratic rule of blinding electro and heavily strobed dance music.
These songs have been around a minute already but they meet the criteria set by my lovely. She wants music with changes (ie. more complex song structure than the usual 16-bar measure repetion) and most of all, she wants “music with words.” Strobed vocal samples give her seizures - that’s what she tells me anyway. ha. Lately I’ve been totally wrong, but maybe she’ll like HURCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR.

It’s funny, she says I used to listen to better music but really, I still listen to the same kind of music. Production techniques have changed quite a bit over the years which accounts for some differences in the way dance music sounds now. Really though, it’s still similar. As we drove out of the city for a weekend retreat on Saturday she played a CD she burned in the summer of 2006. On it was this gem, one of the last tracks my wife says we both liked.

It’s not a secret that I’ve been waiting for this release since the announcement of the re-issue way back when. I’ve been a fan of Tiga since the first time I heard is stripped down electro version of “Hot in Herre.” His mix on !K7 played over and over and over on various listening devices throughout the years. In short, I’m a fan of this Montrealer and yet I’ve still never seen him play. Boo.
The remixes for the re-issue of “Sunglasses at Night” are all over the place in terms of stylings. ALTER EGO cuts up a super glitzy bass heavy stomper that barely leaves any of the original melody while KONRAD BLACK keeps things minimal with a dubbed techno version. POPOF gets two takes - the first of which delivers a bleepy thunderous pounding ideal for dark rooms big and small. The second keeps more of Corey Hart’s iconic synth line providing a perfect electro hook with the combination of pogo beats. D.I.M. brews ominous dark moods and pours more electro-flavoured stabs over modulated bass. Oh, the original version Tiga and ZYNTHERIUS (the self-declaired God of Synth) is still deluxe. Just got the latest from the roXor camp in the form of another PATRICK ALAVI remix. Before you start getting all sweaty, the newest Alavi reroX is nothing like either the maximalist Nirvana or Justin Timberlake grindfests.
This fine piece of production follows a different path which still takes a number of postmodern twists. Alavi edits SHINICHI OSAWA’s track “Star Guitar” keeping the grooves locked into the realms of house music somethings. For those who’ve been around for a minute will recognize the title of the track. In fact, this is actually a remix of Osawa’s cover version of THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS‘ second single from their 2002 album Come With Us.
As the final days of summer approach Alavi’s reroX brings lasting warmth. It’s perfect for a sunny Sunday afternoon in a park somewhere full of people dancing, sitting, and smiling. Likewise, this would fit well with any open highway soundtrackembracing any changes that lie ahead.
Some 8-bit stylings from RAMBRANDT. This piece doesn’t sound that bad. The thing though, 8-bit shenanigans are fun and all, but I don’t know why people try so hard to make something sound terrible. Back in the day, when I didn’t acutely focus entirely on dance floor rhythms I liked lo-fi, well some of it anyway. Remember ERIC’S TRIP anyone? I admit then, there are occasions when shitty production can still be quite aesthetic. By definition however, 8-Bit soundz limit the maximal goodness of the auditory sepctrum. If you’re going to make the effort to produce something, why not produce something where all the parts sound good?

BONUS: Eric’s Trip - September
Gearing down here in another post, this next one is from the former drummer of THE EPOCHS. Hailing from Brookly, KOTCHY left the band to pursue his own musical insterests and will release his first album, 89, this fall. Bruce Fleetwood is released exclusively as the B side to Kotchy’s forth coming single “She Made It Easy” - a sexy dancefloor number with hints of the dark side of disco.
Using some simple loops and vocal samples Kotchy fuses two American musical icons into a solid, uplifting groove. The track builds off of an infectious bassline; the kind of bassline that doesn’t normally appear on these pages. It’s a natural but electric bassline your uncle may have smoked some reefer to enhance his listening pleasure; the kind of bassline that feels like the soft skin of a loved one’s shoulder during a long embrace; the kind of bassline that sounds like sunshine after a gloomy day.

I don’t know much about this producer other than this is his first attempt at remixing. YONSON was able to take a song from a band that I can’t stand and turn it into a slow moving floor burner. I’m looking forward to hearing more…
