KICK 40 REMIXED

Monday, August 11, 2008

It’s been far too long since one of these posts appeared on these pages so please don’t be hatin’.

MGMT

Like the band’s presence on the KICK 40 this track has been about for a minute already. It even started THE SHAKE on the July 25th episode, but don’t let this stop you from giving it the blog love, especially because this track’s so HOT!

The original by MGMT is pretty good, actually it’s really good and I hope it climbs up a spot to number one. Justice added some of their filter magic turning the tune into a slow-moving floor burner. The vocal addition from the Broolyn production duo DDPESH adds some B.I.G. 90s gangsta flow.

Scoop it from my man Jason over at MASHUPTOWN.COM.

ddpesh - Nasty Feel (MGMT vs Justice vs Notorious B.I.G.)

You can here more dancefloor remixes and reconstructions every Friday.

SPIRITUALIZED + CHEMICAL BROTHERS

Saturday, August 9, 2008

I finally started sorting out my records and came across this gem that dates back an entire decade. In a way, finding this 12″ gives me some sort of vindication. You see, it’s proof that my love for remixes runs further than the posts on this blog.

MP3: Spiritualized - I Think I’m In Love (Chemical Brothers remix)

MODULAR + SCION A/V

Friday, August 8, 2008

SCION AUDIO VISUAL (Scion A/V) has once again partnered with some of the best names in the biz to produce another exclusive release. This time Scion A/V has teamed up with Australia’s MODULAR RECORDS for the Modular Remixed mini-compilation, featuring 4 tracks from the current Modular artillery. Here are Three of them.

“Rio” is a highlight of the recent album by BUMBLEBEEZ, Prince Umberto & The Sister of Ill and it’s given a slamming dancefloor beef up by East London’s BOY 8-BIT. Boy 8-Bit is a part of London’s all conquering fidget house scene and has recently broadened his wings to release on Diplo’s Mad Decent label, and his remix is a straight up strobe light grind.

MP3: Bumblebeez - Rio (Boy 8-Bit Remix)

“F.A.N.” was a sleeper hit on the NEW YOUNG PONY CLUB album Fantastic Playroom, and here in the hands of Tampa Bay, Florida’s riot-starting YO MAJESTY is turned into the kind of house party classic it always wanted to be. Beyond just remixing the song, the girls from Yo Majesty have added their own vocals and taken the song to a whole new place.

MP3: New Young Pony Club -  F.A.N. (Yo Majesty Remix)

THE PRESETS have slowly but stealthily gone about world domination and with the release of their new record, Apocalypso. “This Boy’s In Love” is the lovelorn centrepiece of the new record, and appears here remixed by Detroit techno don KEVIN SAUNDERSON. Taking in elements of the Detroit sound he’s become so well known and loved for, Kevin Saunderson is the perfect foil for The Presets, turning This Boy’s In Love into a winding, disorienting techno journey custom made for dark dancefloors.

NELSON

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

This isn’t exactly Manalogue material but I’ve been a fan of angular rock for a while and since some might call NELSON a disco punk outfit the four piece balances nicely here. They’ve been compared to a slew of acute guitar-based dance acts like Interpol, Tokyo Police Club, and The Rapture. Watch out for these Parisians and the influx of remixes that should flood the blogs in a minute. There’s already a hot remix of “I Say You Can’t Stop” (the song in the video below) from datA on their myspace page.

DOMENICO BIANCARDI + RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE + THE CLASH

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

Sample-based music has been around for decades but within the last few years it’s exploding. Some of the earliest uses of samples date back to the when the Amen break was first torn apart and reconfigured in funk and hip hop, in both live and produced environments. With the rise of hip hop and various forms of electronic dance music sample use has become increasingly more common - not just from the famous beat credited to THE WINSTONS in the 1960s but from other parts of countless songs, movies and television shows as well. Now - with the number of bootlegs and remixes flooding record shops and places like THE HYPE MACHINE alike, entire songs (not just the use of samples) are open for re-use and re-interpretation which in turn has restructured the entire music industry. Advancements in technology is the leading suspect for this change and like it or not, for better or worse, its here to stay.

Domenico Biancardi

Here’s a rework from Italy’s DOMENICO BIANCARDI that’s largely built on a few different samples from an iconic song. The end result provides dancefloor heat with some slightly progressive breakdowns and a stompy beat.

MP3: Rage Against The Machine - Killing in the Name (Biancardi mix)

A couple weeks ago Biancardi sent a remix he did of The Clash’s classic. As with the track above, this one has a bit of Baltimore Club flavour and is sure to be a hit in any set. Somehow the tune managed to hide in my inbox until now so here it is as well.

MP3: The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go (Biancardi mix)

DR. ALBAN + TMX + HAPPY MONDAYS

Saturday, August 2, 2008

It’s no secret that I love remixes of tunes that were cheese at one point. For that reason there will continually be posts of bad 90s rap and in this case, bad Euro dance. Oh but there’s more.

Member of the Budapest DJ team KOLLEKTIVA, TMX remixed Dr. Alban’s work that relied so heavily on the Happy Mondays sample. While there’s not much re-interpretation in this track specifically, this is the exact kind of musical connect the dots that gives me a boner for post-modernism. You see, some consider the HAPPY MONDAYS the fathers of rave. It was this band that allowed people to dance like they never have before - maybe thanks to a trunk load of ecstacy smuggled from Spain - at the legendary HACIENDA.

TMX’s remix relies on the obvious vocal sample, but adds a grimey bassline that should cause a bit of a wiggle.

MP3: Dr. Alban - Sing Hallelujah (TMX remix)

Bez - drop acid not bombs

COKE

Saturday, August 2, 2008

It’s hard to beleive that the Bejing Olympics are less than a week away. What’s more difficult to get my head around is how much the Chinese government control the event and its related press. Apparently the IOC are upset over the amount of censorship the communist nation has imposed, particularly in regards to blocked web pages as well as entire sites. For example, if you were in China trying to read the BBC Chinese news you’d get a 404 - or page not found message. What’s more outstanding is that the country received so little flack for everything including their positions on basic human rights, Tibet, and censorship. It seems as though the international community really doesn’t want to muddy the waters so they’re not doing anything at all. Party on Wayne. Party on Garth. These thoughts aren’t really supposed to appear on Manalogue so let’s get on with it…shall we?

COCA-COLA have caught some of the spirit of the games in the eight weeks leading to the official opening on 08/08/08. Through a unique collaboration, eight of China’s most-exciting visual artists (individual graphic designers and design teams) were united with eight musicians from various western countries to interpret ideas and passions that connect people.

A couple weeks ago, I posted the first four collaborations, and here are three more.

Jes

Jes. The singer/songwriter has previously worked with Gabriel & Dresden as the group Motorcycle, well known for their club hit “As The Rush Comes”. Currently, she is signed to Tiesto’s Black Hole Recordings label. For We8, Jes wrote a song based on the theme of “Individual Perseverance” and on the artwork of Jiang Hua.

MP3: Jes - Be It All

Kaskade

Kaskade says the inspiration for this song came from what he thought, “athletes give up in order to get where they are, in the Olympics. The hours of training and sacrifice to make it to that level of competition is amazing to me. The song is about that idea, how people have to give up the little things in order to achieve their goals – in this case, the Olympic Games.”

MP3:Kaskade - Beautiful Thing

Lucas Prata

Lucas Prata penned the seventh song. Here’s what he says about it. “This song is a “feel-good song.” When I wrote it with Valentin, we wanted to write something that was uplifting and positive, like the Coca-Cola brand, that everyone could sing along to. We were inspired by the cultural differences that participate in the Olympic Games and wanted to lyrically bring everyone together, to feel like they all could relate to the song.”

MP3:Lucas Prata - Just Say Yeah

Bet you can’t wait to see what the last one is!

CHEMICAL BROTHERS VIDEO CONTEST

Saturday, August 2, 2008

The CHEMICAL BROTHERS are set to release a best-of album aptly titled Brotherhood. In anticipation of the release, here’s the video for “Midnight Madness.”

Midnight Madness

CREATE ʻMIDNIGHT MADNESSʼ THE WORLD OVER WITH GOOGLE EARTH
Ever since their inception in 1993, The Chemical Brothers have soundtracked numerous special moments in countless peopleʼs lives. Whether itʼs the music of choice for a big night out, or the key moment that kicks the party into ascension, or even the inevitable comedown period in the milky pre-dawn hours, it is nigh on impossible to contest Tom and Edʼs enduring impact. We’re looking for creative people worldwide to get involved as we bring together filmmakers and artists through the technology of Google Earth. This is an exciting invitation to participate, and you can do so by making a short film clip or photograph that revolves around the theme of ʻMidnight Madness.ʼ

Make your own short film clip (from 2 to 20 seconds), or take a photograph, celebrating the insanity that goes on at the stroke of midnight and related to the specific point of origin. Then upload it to Google Earth via The Chemical Brothersʼ website, and tag it to its exact global location. To do this you will need to have your own YouTube or Flickr account, and the site will walk you through the process of submitting your content.

The Midnight Madness global video project is a celebration of the odd things that people get up to at the midnight hour – take that as the brief. Think local. How would your film sit within Google Earth, and how does it relate to your location? Your film will be tagged to where you shot it.

Videos of any resolution will be accepted as part of the overall Google Earth project, but if you want your film to be considered for the main film the resolution needs to be 640×480 pixels minimum – and higher, if at all possible. You will also need to supply some contact details, and agree to the terms and conditions of the music video.

Deadline for submissions via Chemical Brothersʼ website for the film project is Monday 25th August 2008 at 13.00 GMT, but the sooner the better. All the creative work submitted from around the world on Google Earth via The Chemical Brothers website. Midnight Madness is released as a digital download on the 18th August and the long player Brotherhood is released on the 1st September both on Freestyle Dust/Virgin Records.

This is one of my favourite mashups. It’s simple but so effective. The second two tracks have made their way around the blogs for a minute already but if you haven’t scooped it up yet, now’s your chance.

FABRICLIVE. 41 SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

In a way, James Ford and Jas Shaw should be credited for the creation and publication of MANALOGUE.COM. A few years ago I was super depressed with music from record shops here in the Peg. A very dear loved one noticed my downtroddenness and encouraged me to order some new records online. During one purchasing binge I blindly came across “HUSTLER.” I went bonkers for this track which subsequently spawned my brighter love for dance music, eventually leading to this blog.

When fabric sent a promo copy of FABRICLIVE. 41 Simian Mobile Disco I was super pumped to check it out. The first few mixes on the disc reminded of me of my early rave days where late evenings were spent dancing until the sun was bright. The mixes are subtle, slow, and technically precise. The lack of strobed vocals became apparent straight away and in fact, SMD steer clear of all strobed activity. It’s refreshing that SMD keep this mix clean with a brilliant 22-track collection of robotdisco which confidently pounds some old fashioned techno into this blend of dancefloor sonics. SMD start by letting loose with some kind of rhythmic bird and a fluffy layer of funk from Sistors of Transistor. The mix keeps the rollers locked to the synthetic flavours of disco like the captivating track from Metro Area who hype things up with their pillowy bassline. The adventure graduates into some meaty techno - finishing with two classics Spastik and Flash before the cooldown from the last track from Walker Brothers.

The CD drops August 11 in the UK and September 16 in North America. When it’s available, you can get your copy from fabric.
