BASEMENT FREAKS – GOTTA MAKE ME A GUN (MOOMBAH EDIT) [FREE DOWNLOAD]

basement freaks east block tour1

The boys from BASEMENT FREAKS recently returned from a 8500 km, 15 show tour through the east block of Europe. Appropriately titled the “Funk From the Trunk East Block Tour” they succinctly and eloquently recapped the tour here. For me, it was more or less summed up in these few lines.

For every tough moment there was always another one so ridiculously awesome, so freakishly funky we could not help but smile and follow along in our east Block European adventure.

I think many tours, especially ones covering massive distances, could be summarized as such but the entire post is worth a read.

The Freaks kicked off the tour with a free download, so we’ll end with that.

SKEEWIFF – LET’S HAVE SCRATCH FOR BREAK-FEST [FREE DOWNLOAD]

skeewiff - greatest wiffs

Aw yeah! Another Manalogue premiere. This one comes courtesy of SKEEWIFF and Jalapeno Records. The freebee is to celebrate the release of Skeewiff’s latest release – a tight and tasty remastered compilation of some new-ish and longstanding favourites.

As founders of the label, Elliot Ireland and Alex Rizzo (aka Skeewiff) fully embody Jalapeno Records’ mantra of eclecticism and strong roots in soul and funk. Their back catalogue speaks to this, and the “Greatest Wiff” showcases it all. Ye-Ye Hammond belters sit next to breakbeat country while lounge-inspired grooves blend nicely into swing.

Free download

Here are a few more cuts from the comp, which can be pre-ordered here. Oh, and if you by the CD, you get mp3s free as well.

Their Megamash Bonaza is available for free download too.

JALAPENO HOUSE VOLUME 3

Jalapeno House Volume 3

Jalapeno Records has never been tied to any genre. Looking at their past releases you’re as likely to find drum & bass as deep house, lounge tracks as mid-tempo bass. Their catalogue though, is linked by one simple fact. Jalapeno’s mission one might say, is to deliver the funk. The fine folks at Jalapeno have a new compilation showcasing this fact, however their latest explores a housier side of their releases. For this, and the quality the compilation contains, we salute them.

Below are a few choice cuts, followed by a stellar mix. We’ll start with the standout cut but after that, anything goes. It’s all good. Skip the previews even and head straight to beatport for the exclusive.

KRAAK AND SMAAK – CHROME WAVES [+ FREE DOWNLOADS]

Kraak and Smaak

Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug, better known as KRAAK AND SMAAK, released Chrome Waves (yesterday) on October 28. The long player delves into funk, disco, and house. Let’s step away from that for a bit — because when writing about music, especially with the varied and wildly diverse world of dj culture, it’s easy to get caught up in a genre trap.

This record, released on Jalapeno Records is the fourth from the Dutch trio and shows the band’s (yes, it’s fair and accurate to call this collective a band) roots in funk but it also highlights their growth as producers. With Chrome Waves, they don’t rely on past tools and formulas — that alone has to be one of the biggest elements of talent and progression for any musician. Don’t get me wrong, there are some throwbacks to some of their earlier releases but these 11 tracks launch Kraak and Smaak into the future. Sonically, the album is a masterpiece. The bass notes compliment every snare, high hat, key stab, bleep and bloop perfectly; each layer balanced precisely for both dancefloor and auditory excursion like no other.

Feel free to stream the tracks below or just head over to beatport or iTunes and grab the whole album.

KRAAK & SMAAK – JUST WANNA BE LOVED (K&S DISCO EDIT) [FREE DOWNLOAD]

kraak-smaak-trio

Dutch production trio KRAAK & SMAAK are about the release their new album, Chrome Waves on October 28 on Jalapeno Records. The trio’s first single “The Future Is Yours” made waves and landed them a Mixmag tune of the month. Their second single “Good For The City” looks likely to repeat the same success.

To celebrate the release of their new album and single, the trio are giving away their own remix of another album track “Just Wanna Be Loved.” The tune features sultry vocals from New York house mistress Joi Cardwell. Kraak & Smaak take the original’s pop sensibilities for a ride into a glittering disco paradise where Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder frolic in the reflections of a mirror ball.

Kraak & Smaak launched the album with a live show at Melkweg Amsterdam as part of ADE on October 16.

BASEMENT FREAKS – SOUL INTOXICATION [PREMIERE]

BF_SOUL_INTOX_1500px

Super excited to with this world premier of BASEMENT FREAKS‘ latest single, “Soul Intoxication” or at least the free download in the form of a remix from TOM DRUMMOND. The remix EP includes another hot remix. From LA, SKAGGS and LONELY BOY take their mix deep and techy while maintaining uplifting underpinnings of the original.

In this premiere and free download, Tom Drummond filters the funk from the original and in its place shines some summery house and robotdisco. When listening to this it’s hard not to imagine cruising on a bike down a boardwalk, with soft sand, blazing sun, and smiles all around.

The single is released on Jalapeno Records on August 12. We’ll have to wait until closer to that date to hear the Skaggs and Lonely Boy remix, unfortunately. On the other hand, here’s the original if you missed it.

JALAPENO BASS

jalpenobass

Bass. It’s the linchpin of everything that’s funky on today’s dancefloor. Over the years, JALAPENO RECORDS has heard its fair share of basslines and feels that it’s time to pay homage to the sometimes underappreciated stalwart of dance music. Jalapeno Bass brings a heavyweight selection of tracks released on the label, plus a few exclusives, from the likes of Featurecast, Redlight, Kraak & Smaak, RackNRuin, Dr Meaker and Futurizm to name a few.

We’ll start with this free download of FEATURECAST‘s remix of KRAAK & SMAAK‘s “Squeeze Me.” Full disclaimer here: this one’s a stomper and the proof couldn’t come more naturally. Three weeks ago, minutes after Featurecast posted this to his SoundCloud page I opened the SoundCloud app on my phone and this was the first tune in my feed. My four year old son went mental, immediately started dancing with moves that compelled him to jump off of the back of the coutch. He still asks me to play this tune almost daily and I always happily answer his request with, “YES!”

You can hear the Jalapeno homage to bass in this stellar mix (below), running through tracks and tempos like kids through sprinklers. You can find a few other choice tunes (in order as they appear on the compilation) after the jump.

Mid-tempo bass at its finest, TONIC always brings game.

Mighty fine dub from TAPE LOOPS and PARKER.

Future bass from FUTURIZM.

For anyone enjoying the garage revival, this EP has to be checked out. This tune is an absolute bomb, but I’m especially digging the Markus Jakes Remix!

This remix by HEAVYFEET came out nearly a year ago, it’s still in high rotation in the Manalogue HQ.

All kinds of yes on this NEON STEVE remix of THE BEEKEEPERS.
