Australia’s SANGERS & RA second release on Westway is a fine example of the breaks. The booming kick drum and the sharp snares in the opening of the original cut are enough to blast out a bomb shelter. Germany’s FUNKANOMICS grinds an equally deep hole with their remix. Support is rounded out from KEITH MACKENZIE, TERRY HOOLIGAN and FILTHY REHAB with their bass-heavy interpretations.
THE BLISTER BOYZ are a French duo living between Paris and Toulon. They decided to release this bootleg today to celebrate the upcoming release of their second EP and to let you know what you can expect from them in the near future.
I’m sure you’ve heard by now that JUSTICE is back with a new single. “Civilization” is released on ED BANGER RECORDS and it looks as though Elektra has picked up a distribution deal as well. The new cut will be available on iTunes April 4th and other digital retailers April 11th.
Something a bit strange just happened. A minimal email came from the ED BANGER RECORDS crew, who just happened to include a link to a new track from JUSTICE. And while I’m a little suspicious, the tune certainly sounds like it could be from the French duo who conquered the world with their last album.
Yes, it’s deep and full of flared horns, but didn’t Xavier and Gaspard say they wanted to go in a new direction with a future release? Let’s read into this a bit then, starting with the track’s title, “Beginning of the End.” I’m going to say something was lost in the translation and perhaps it’s the end of the beginning. After all, about half-way through the tune changes directions. Why don’t you have a listen and tell me what you think.
The last time METERHEAD sent material this way we were just getting into the swing of summer so this latest package has been received with the glee of a coffee addict who’s been without its joyous flavour for three months. It’s not as if the duo from Los Angeles have been slacking – if you’ve read these pages you would have known that other projects have been keeping them busy.
Among the three remixes is a melancholy version of ACID GIRLS and FRANKMUSIK‘s summer anthem. METERHEAD appropriately muted the bright colours of the original with something a bit dark and brooding which is suitable for the loss of daylight in these northern parts.
They also take on WALE and LADY GAGA‘s club tune, keeping the energy high but manipulate it for those who would shy far away from that kind of fodder. You might remember Wale from his version of D.A.N.C.E. which incidentally was chosen by JUSTICE as the best (out of the hundreds) of bootlegs they heard.
If I might dare say, none of these tunes would distinctly fall into any of METERHEAD’s previous patterns of production. There’s some familiarity with their work for THE BLACK LIPS, however. It’s partially due to the undertones of electro and grinding synth combined with the hip hop influence from GZA.
All the way from Paris, CONFETTI brings you DATA. The story goes, his gig in LA was cancelled so he’s coming here between his Edmonton and Toronto shows. Werd up. The show is at Ozzy’s on July 31. It will be incredible and we have a stack of tickets to give away. If you’re in Winnipeg hit me up and yer in.
