legit fridays

Another installment of Legit:Fridays is upon us this week. The monthly is dedicated to bass music done proper and focuses its frequencies on the underground. You won’t be turned away if you’re wearing neon, but chances are if you’re PLURing out with it, you’ll likely be in the minority.

Friday, May 23 (and every 2nd last Friday of the month)
Ozzy’s (160 Osborne Street)
Tix: $5 before midnight / $10 after
Facebook event page

On the bill this month is GRUDGE, who may or may not let loose the sub bass at 100 bpm. Memetic‘s director NATHAN ZAHN is a house and techno purist so I’m curious as to what he’s going to play. CHRIS KOMUS is a wonderkid of glitch. The last time I heard him play he opened for Stickybuds and the sonics he had in his set were otherworldly. I’m also on the bill and have been building a crate for months for this show. It’s going to go something like this…

Yuri’s Night is always one of my favourite events of the year. The annual event commemorates the first human spaceflight by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961 and the inaugural launch of NASA’s Space Shuttle on April 12, 1981. This year marks the 53rd anniversary of Yuri’s flight into space for which the Manitoba Museum is a proud participant in the global night of art, science, and culture of space exploration.

The dance portion of the party takes place in the museum’s Planetarium which was  upgraded dramatically last year with a Digistar 5 all-dome projector. Last year, the visuals blew my mind so once again, I’m looking forward to seeing what PIXEL PUSHER and FLAMEWAR have in store.

Saturday, April 12
The Manitoba Museum (190 Rupert Avenue)
Tix: $15 SOLD OUT (there may be some available at the door)
Facebook event page

THE SHAKE (LOTEK & MANALOGUE), NATHAN ZAHN, DAVE RAD, and JR provide the soundtrack on this rocket-ride.

Can’t speak for the others but this is one tune I’m going to play.

sanctuary march 22 2014

Super stoked for the next Sanctuary. It might have something to do with the fact that I get to play, but also because it’s one of the most intimate club nights Winnipeg has going.

Saturday, March 22
The Loft 774 Corydon Avenue
Tix: $5
Facebook event page

The evening will be curated by a few old timers. KRISCO might play some jungle and drum n bass, or he could play the 4/4 rhythms. Who knows.

ALEXANDER KRYGSVELD, who regularly pays tribute to the underground at Back2House, will grace the decks. A set from ANDREW YANKIWSKI, producer and audio engineer from Precursor Productions, promises to bring sonic delights as well.

I’m having a difficult time figuring out what I’m going to play. The general theme will be deep in sonics and may go something like this…

Winnipeg has a substantial history of dj culture for a city of its size. One of the problems with it though is that, at times, it’s a little segregated with a number of different niches battling it out to reach a somewhat limited audience. That audience seemingly gets younger and younger (as geezers like me get older) and it chases the neon flash of a diluted “EDM.” That’s not intentionally meant to sound elitist but there are certainly a number of us who think this and we’re looking for nights out with much more substance.

That substance can be found in a relatively new monthly called SANCTUARY.

The organizers of this monthly have been around, djing, going to shows, and throwing parties for nearly two decades. They describe the night as a more intimate experience than your average club night with some of Winnipeg’s veteran and up-and-coming djs playing dub, broken beat, house, and techno.

The lineup for this month has some truly great talent, notably JOE SILVA, one of the house and techno pioneers in Winnipeg. As a solo artist and as half of TONEPUSHERS, he’s released material on Thoughtless, 7 Stars Music, Balanced Records, and a whack load of other labels.

We’re going to be treated to a set from Samo, who’s been behind the lens quite a bit lately and hasn’t played publicly for a minute. He’s one of the doods behind the now defunct Voules Random blog but keeping on top of things, sending me tunes to check out every now and then. The night will finish with a set from JUSTIN KACE, who’s also one of the aforementioned organizers behind the monthly. His grip on the atmospherics of techno should take us to new heights.

I’m also honoured to be on the bill this month and I’m looking forward to a deep dive into some house music. There will likely be a heavy dose of material from OFF RECORDINGS as well as some other jems from NURVOUS.

So, some mates and I are throwing our second swing party and it’s going down this Saturday. The first one (last November) was easily the most rammed, all-locals show I’ve seen and was definitely one of the best shows I’ve played, let alone partied at. We’re hoping the excitement continues, obviously.

You can grab the details in the poster above but if you need more check the facebook event here.

YURI’S NIGHT is just around the corner! This is one of my favourite events of the year, after all, it’s not every day you get to play in the Manitoba Museum’s Planetarium. As THE SHAKE, Lotek and I have been lucky enough to be part of the Winnipeg event, which is one of hundreds around the planet, since the fist one in 2010.

JFunk, Justin Kace, and Redworm help us out with their space-themed aural adventures and we have mixtapes from them below. The night is always so much fun but the thing is, the Planetarium has a really small capacity so get there early or buy your tickets in advance.

This year is going to be extra special because the Planetarium recently upgraded the facility with a Digistar 5 all-dome projector. I’ve heard tests were amazing. Really looking forward to seeing what JAYMEZ and PIXEL PUSHER will treat us with.

Yuri’s Night commemorates the first human spaceflight by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961 and the inaugural launch of NASA’s Space Shuttle on April 12, 1981. This year marks the 52nd anniversary of Yuri’s flight into space for which the Manitoba Museum is a proud participant in the global night of art, science, and culture of space exploration. In addition to the dance party the night features a space-themed costume contest, cash bar, free pizza, and hands-on science coolness in the Science Gallery.

…and now for the mixes! If you didn’t know LOTEK is the bacon in my breakfast. He shot over his mixtape for MEME submission, appropriately titled MEME Generator. It opens slow, which is one of Lotek’s signatures but gets meaty rather quickly, serving a heavy plate of deep and funky. You’ll dig this one.

MP3: Lotek – MEME Generator

I love techno but I rarely listen to it and practically never play it. JUSTIN KACE‘ live mix from DUALBEAT‘s show with Ghosts on Tape, might change that. Love it!

As one of the point men behind BASS INVADERS, Redworm is responsible for bringing some unbelievable shows to Winnipeg. REDWORM‘s sets are something to look forward to because he’s always on top of where things are heading. He normally plays a wide variety of bass music but for this show he tells us he’s shifting things a bit. Unfortunately we don’t have a newer recording for Redworm but take a listen to this anyway – it’ll blow your mind.

Here’s my latest mix. It’s a quick deep house to breaks jaunt.

Sadly too, we don’t have a mix from JFunk, aka Jordan Chester. You need to know this guy though – he’s responsible for bringing some of my favourite djs to Winnipeg. A.Skillz, Krafty Kuts, JFB…the list goes on and on.
